Yep, I remember Nostalgia & Comics in Birmingham (still there, just a subsidiary of FP now), and The Place in Wolverhampton, which was replaced by Arrival, which closed when FP came into town. Thank you FP :frustrated:

Not a great advert for Nostalgia & Comics either...

Fantasy World at Hanley was my LCS for two decades taking over from Interstellar which was also in S-O-T. From the above list I also remember Odyssey 7 at Manchester and Nostalgia at Birmingham.

During the 90's I switched from getting my back issues from the LCS to the comics fairs at the Hallam university at Sheffield and the Saches Hotel in Manchester and finally switching to online buying post 2000.

All my early comics (mid 70's) were bought off spinny racks in newsagents, an outdoor market in Middlesbrough (along with packs of football cards that contained pink chewing gum!) a great indoor market in Stockton and a couple of local 'bookshops' that were just excuses to stock second hand porn mags!

one of those 'bookshops' was on Borough Road. excellent selection of comics and postes and erm 'mucky books and vids'. remember buying MTU96 there especially.

I remember Chapter One in Liverpool , used to get my advance imports there , piles of back issues in pidgeon holes , just stacked up no bags or boards .

My favourite shop though was EASY READER in Moorfields Liverpool , used to go ever friday afternoon after work and spend my meagre wages .

Ah, now THIS takes me back! Bolland did this piece to advertise FP way back in the old days. I remember seeing the ad hundreds of times and this print transported me back to the 80's for a second there :cloud9:

That's cool! (thumbs u I well remember that ad being used to advertise the New York store in the 1980s. I never knew that was drawn by Bolland.

London - start at GOSH near the British Museum, down to COMICANA near the brolly shop, down the avenue to FORBIDDEN PLANET, up & across to ORBITAL, and down again to COMIC SHOWCASE - the sign's still there but it now sells leather goods....

Pretty much my route when I was London at a conference in Dec 07. Have another conference in a few weeks but this time will skip FP!

Here's a list of the UK comic shops as they were in 1987....

Remember any....?

I remember most of the London shops - never heard of the Sign Of The Dragon or Fantasy Centre though...

Heroes in Islington was run by Alan Austin, editor of the original British price guide. I still see him at the Royal National shows - a top bloke. Quality Comics was run by Dez Skinn, prior to his starting Comics International in 1990.

How things have changed - only FP remains from that list. Anyone remember Fantasy Inn and Paradise Alley, both shops on or just off the Charing Cross Road? They were from that era.

Fantasy World at Hanley was my LCS for two decades taking over from Interstellar which was also in S-O-T.

There was a fantastic little comic shop in Hartshill in Stoke-on-Trent in the late 70s/early 80s, which is where my love of comics started first time round.

I go back to Stoke occasionally to see family, sometimes drive past the shop (the comics have long since gone) and indulge in a little nostalgia...

Oh, the memories. :cloud9:

At least in the pigeon-holes, they couldn't get their lunch over them...like they did the new imports. doh!

The Harshill shop was the 'Interstellar' one I mentioned also at one time known simply as The Book Shop. Wondeful place. It's a florists now. They were still selling comics there in the early 90's. Not sure when it finally closed.

I see no shops listed for Brighton on that pic?

Forbidden Planet on Sydney Street - CLOSED

Fantastic Store on Gardner Street - CLOSED

Hive on Kensington Gardens - CLOSED

All we have left is Dave's Book Exchange which was there before the others and has outlived them all. They were a second hand book shop which had a back room with longboxes full of low grade readers. They have a second shop two doors along now which is a proper modern comic shop.

Nick, have you been into Chaos City Comics lately? I've been meaning to drop in to see Derek but just haven't found the time.

I'm going back even before that one on Borough Rd Neil. There was one where the Herbal Medicine shop is now near the defunct Virgin shop (soon to be the defunct Zavi shop!) which had a great fish shop next to it. The music shop on the corner is still standing on the end.

The other was on one of those side streets off Parliament Rd.

That's right! I attended nearby Newcastle High School and would often walk to the shop after school. I remember that at one time the comics were in the basement, before they were moved to a room upstairs. The proprietor (now what was his name?) had a love of heavy metal. I recently downloaded Ozzy's Crazy Train from iTunes 'cos it transports me back to that shop circa 1980!
