Ditko Spidey & Dr Strange sketch on ebay

I think very few would care about condition -- I think it's all about the image -- and for me personally, I liked this image much better than the one that sold on CL. There's just a lot more action going on.

Sold for 19K+ change. Anyone know to who? That's a very strong price for eBay and I think it was worth it.

Some guy from the UK with the eBay handle of "microjon". If I didn't know better, I'd guess it might be celebrity Jonathan Ross.

Why do you think it isn't? He admitted he'd beaten me out on a Ditko page once before (although it was a different id). I'd take a punt and say it probably was he.

I can confirm that "microjon" is Jonathan Ross' Ebay ID. Major comic and toy collector...the "micro" refers to Microman/Micronauts, a Japanese toy line from the 70's.

But, but but... ???? celebrities don't buy artwork. (shrug) Right? :flamed:

It's ok, he barely counts; after his suspension by the BBC he's almost down to his last £50 Million.

Yeah but Ross is a major Ditko fanatic. Anyone who can pitch an esoteric journalism piece about Ditko to the BBC as an excuse for meeting his hero, has to be off. Hope he takes care of the artwork.

For the eBay forensic record, microjon fired off two snipes in the final seconds on top of his winning bid. My guess is the piece would have easily gone above $20K (probably closer to $30K) if it had any competition. So, yeah, microjon is someone with deep pockets who really wanted this piece.

I would venture to say there are global celebrities that neither one of us have heard of but could yet buy and sell each of us several times over.

Until they made "The Office" available on DVD in America I had never heard of Ricky Gervais and he was a GIANT celebrity in europe before that. Ever since then I try not to be as Amero-Centric when thinking of who is and isn't a celebrity.

C

PS. I guess he would be the equivalent of Leno or Letterman to us. That and a annual salary in excess of $10 million American will buy you a lot of ditko.

He's definitely a local celebrity. If you took a poll in the UK, I'm sure the majority would know who he is.

I remember seeing him on Discovery Channel in the early-90's when he hosted a cool series called THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE FILM SHOW, which highlighted cult filmmakers. Worth checking out if you can find it (it's probably on YouTube).

As for his geek creds, make no mistake, he's the real deal. He used to be a member of a Microman mailing list (he still may be for all I know), and would post often. Sorry to out you, Jonathan!:P

Also, he was at SDCC a couple of years ago and bought a pile of very impressive art. He's well-known as a major comic/comic art collector. He's just donated an AF 15 for a local charity auction.

I'm not surprised at all that he won this auction.

I even watch BBC America and I'm still not familiar with him :)

As Chris points out, he is sort of our equivalent to Letterman.

In search of Steve Ditko did seem like a chance to indulge his inner fanboy and get paid to do so.

As usual wiki is a starting point

His kids are named after Jack Kirby and Bettie Page....

So I guess if he admires Ditko....his next son will be called Steve :-)

He can do worse. He might name his baby Gorgo. Or maybe, Konga. Shade is not bad. But if he gets hit with a paternity suit he'll have to call the baby, The Question.

Yeah, I enjoyed his "Search For Steve Ditko" but thought it was self-indulgent in the end. It was like, "I got to meet Steve, he gave us comics, and you don't know what you're missing! ha ha." If you're going to carry your audience along on a hunt, you might as well present him in some way (privacy concerns notwithstanding) the best you can.
