Customs Charges on Comics to UK from USA

38 posts in this topic

I've bought 3500 comics from the USA and am having them shipped Ocean freight to the UK. What is the definitive answer on UK import taxes/custom/duty charges?? I have been told that there is no duty on printed paper. Can someone provide a link stating this as I cannot find it anywhere.

I've had a few some conflicting answers to this in a previous thread, but as my items shipout Tomorrow I just want to be 100% sure so I dont get stuck with a big duty bill.

You won't pay any VAT on them as long as the seller has declared them as comics/books on the customs form.

Don't know about customs tax though - you might be lucky and they won't open the package.

Printed matter is zero rated for both Import Tax and VAT.

But clearly you'll want to dispute that... :baiting:

If Jonah Hex gives me the Night Nurse that he won (something about that just sounds strange!) I'll dispute anything lol

I've dealt with this many times. It doesn't matter what the seller has declared them as, because even when declaring them as printed matter, I've sometimes had customs slap a charge on the package. If this happens to you, you just need to tell them that the items should be zero-rated and the Tariff Code for the comic books is "492000000". They will then look this number up and confirm it should be zero rated and remove the charges. Here is the link that shows that they should be zero rated for VAT and customs. See section 3.7:

Let me know if you have any problems but this should be all you need.

Name that TV programme!

Don't know the TV prog (you should start a new thread called Name that TV Prog) but I know which poem it comes from: PESCHIERA by Arthur Hugh Clough:

What voice did on my spirit fall,

Peschiera ! When thy bridge I cross'd?

"'Tis better to have fought and lost

Than never to have fought at all ! "

Good work! (worship)

However, I'll give you a clue...the programme was around at the start of the 70s and it was dubbed from the French. (shrug)

Oh , so it's legit? I was always curious if the $500.00 extra tariff fee that Nick charged me on all my purchases was standard. hm

Well, you're probably a bit older than me, then.

It was a kids' programme.
