Cerebus #1 COUNTERFEIT being sold as genuine on ebay WARNING!!!

47 posts in this topic

From the auction description:

Also, I have marked the book in two places, so that only my representative from ebay and I know where the marks are. You will not catch them with the naked eye. Do not atempt to purchase this book and return a different copy. I am sorry to have to state this, but this scam has been attempted on us in the past.

Say hello to a  purple label, potentially.

I just read through the entire thread and this part of the description screams SCAM to me. Most likely there were no "identifying marks" on the book in the first place. I'd be willing to bet that when the buyer returns the book, the seller will accuse him of substituing an unmarked counterfeit copy in place of his original with the secret identifying marks.

The old "I didn't scam you, you scammed me" defense...

None of that will help the seller. Paypal just wants proof the buyer returned it and the buyer gets all his money back. Use a credit card and pay with paypal and you are pretty much cover against anything with the new rules. The seller is the one who has to be careful these days.

Dear cheezywhiz,

Hi, thought I would get back to you regarding the Cerebus #1 you emailed me

about a while ago.

I sent the book to PGX. They verified that it was

a counterfit. I then told the seller:

Ebay ID: wileycoyote373

real

name is: Josh Cooper

And he emailed back saying he wouldn't even talk

to me, and that there were no returns, and that I was trying to scam him!

My ebay account was suspended because of this transaction (thankfully

reinstated). I told Wiley that this was a counterfit book, and not the

item listed he was selling (an authentic), and thus his return policy had

no validity. He expressed no interest in correcting the transaction (the

logical thing being, return the book, for a full refund).

So... I filed

a dispute, as I paid via Paypal (FYI... if you purchase via Paypal, you CAN

file a dispute regardless of their return policy). After several weeks of

Paypal asking for all information about the transaction, including me

getting PGX to fax a letter about the book being a counterfit, I finally

won the dispute. Paypal said return the book with a tracking #, when it

arrives & is signed for, they will refund my money, which occured today,

almost 2 months after the purchase.

I am telling everyone in the comic

community I know about Wiley, and his unwillingness to just accept a

return. AND, because of his attitude, my account was suspended, and I had

to spend an addtional $100+ in shipping, insurance, PGX grading feeing, and

returing shipping & insurance, which Paypal would not reimburse me for.

SO... DON'T BUY FROM WILEY! Tell others. Post to chatrooms. I am

friends with several overstreet advisors, and am making sure to tell them

as well.

Let me know if you have any further ?'s... as of today, the

transaction is complete with my refund.

Cool. He heeded the warnings and had the book slabbed.. at PGX. :o

Now I need to warn him that PGX is as crooked as the ebay seller.

Make sure to give him a link to these forums. He could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he were a member!

I got the same type of response, and was gonna look for this thread...thanks once again to Cheesy for bringing it back up...

This guy wouldn't take anyone's word for it, he had to find out for himself. His right, I suppose.

I told him to REPLY to the (sadly positive) feedback that he left ol' Josh Cooper...but I doubt he will. Doesn't seem very bright, this one.

I completely agree, as I've gotten a wealth of valuable warnings about numerous sellers/scams just in my short time here.

A question from someone who doesn't use EBay anymore, and who hasn't needed to use PayPal in a long time for anything: In a dispute like this, does PayPal take the money out of this scam artist's account? At the very least, did this crook not profit in his blatant rip-off scheme?
