I'm pretty new, so could someone explain the concept of this "white bread" trick?

Well, it has been said that if you have a dirty cover like the pics in this thread, you can take a piece of white bread, fold it in half (or quarters,) and lightly rub it on the comic to remove the soiling. Think of it as a über-soft rubber eraser.

 

By the way, soiling like that can be removed using a rubber eraser, but it's very easy to rub too hard, esp. with the newer, glossier paper. Removing gloss and/or paper is a bad, bad thing (as everyone knows.)

Dirt or light soiling, in theory (as opposed to staining) should not impact the structural grade of a comic book.
