Could Detective 27 one day replace Action 1 as the #1 GA book?

97 posts in this topic

WIth the recent sale this week of a FR/GD Tec 27 for $83,650 at Heritage, combined with the continued popularity of Batman (being superior to Superman IMO)......is Tec 27 headed to "one day" be the #1 Golden Age book, with Action 1 dropping to the #2 spot? It's happened before (not with these 2 books).... In the past, weren't Whiz #2 (#1) and WDC&S #1 the top GA books at some point, and then time / character popularity / hobby changes dethroned them from the top spot?

I don't want to see this happen per se, but it sure seems feasible?, with a recent sales of a low grade unrestored CGC graded Action 1 at ComicConnect and this Heritage Tec 27 selling for very close to identical prices if you adjust for grade. Seems like Tec 27 is "catching up", at least from a value standpoint, to Action 1......question is, can it / might is surpass??? Staying #1 "forever" is a long time.............

that copy presents SO much better than the 1.8 action 1, I think that played a large role in the realized price...

in fact, I would compare this Tec27, to the Action 1 in cgc 2.5 that CC has up for auction next month...almost identical appearance (action has little piece out spine) but slap some tape on the tec to secure the covers, and it is a 2.5, thus, the reason for the higher price, IMO (thumbs u

or, remove the tape from that action 1, and it is a 1.5... 6 one way, 1/2 dozen the other

and, I think batman already overtook (albeit briefly) the #1 spock some 20 years ago, didn't it (shrug)

He did with the first Burton movie. Tec dethroned MC #1 and then Action #1 took over.

I think Rick states accurately why the Tec fetched strong money.

Action #1 is the best of the best. Ground zero.

I think a better question is will Whiz Comics ever regain some of it's former strength as a corner stone run in the hobby?

lol

Seriously, unless the character is revived for modern audiences (in the form of several very successful feature length movies, a memorable comics series, etc) the Big Red Cheese's descent into Comic oblivion is all but assured to continue....

I LOVE the big red cheese....

I was thrilled to be able to put a little Whiz run of 1-25 and a CMA 1-25 run together as "relatively" decent prices... wish I could have kept them

Its not enough that a handful of GA collectors love Capt Marvel (even if a couple of them have deep pockets.... :P ), he needs to somehow be revived for modern audiences, otherwise he's just going to be another GA super hero who fades away as another generation of older collectors leave the hobby.

I actually think Captain Marvel will continue he decline regardless of a blockbuster movie.

a blockbuster movie and a revived current series would assist in reviving (minimally, but upwards nonethe less) the older books...migth not be to noticable, but would stop the downward slide (IMO)

in fact, I would love to take over the writing reigns on such a project hm

Detective #27 has always been more desirable to me, while Action #1 is more significant... I think that the two of them will always hold the top spots, with periodical flip on which is in the top spot, depending on current popularity. I think it all depends on whether or not there is a ceiling, i.e. a point at which the value of a funny book stops... IF the most sought after books (Action 1, TEC 27, Amazing Fantasy 15, FF 1) hit some sort of glass ceiling, then yeah, there might be some random bouncing around in the top spot depending on which one is on the auction block at a given time...

Do ya'll think that the top spot will always be determined by significance, or popularity? Or maybe just availability? What happens if DC fails to make Superman relative for the next couple of generations?

I've noticed a very slight increase in Fawcett collection in my own little world. I personally took an interest to collecting them last summer and have since had Harley ask me if I know of any early Whiz available, Jeff has restarted as well as a few online raw sales fetching decent money.

I understand that Whiz #1 is a tough sell at times but I have my sights on a copy one day soon. I just love that book.

I think a revamp of the character would do wonders. He was so well done in "Kingdom Come". My gosh, the character has so much more to offer than half the heros that cover the newsstands today.

:shy:

A modern twist with a slightly dark and serious Captain Marvel would make a terrific foil against a naive Billy Batson.

Put a good writer and artist on it (Busiek/Ross anyone?) and you'd have something that would put him back on the scene.

Oh yeah, and DC should never have been given the power to kill the character.

By ANY measure Detective 27 could not surpass Action 1.[[Except one]]\

and thats price.Sure it can happen and it will but i would think that 90 percent of the time Action 1 will always be on top price wise.

In my opinion it would take a 9.6 A.F 15 to rival action 1 or Tec 27 in just fine Umrestored condition,

There's been a lot of talk about a movie, and The Rock has expressed interest in playing Black Adam.
