According to reports on CNN and elsewhere, authorities in Colorado have broken up a large ring of methamphetaine dealers who distributed pounds of the drug each week and laundered the profits by purchasing collectible comic books.

Approximately 100 boxes of comics, valued at half a million dollars were seized by authorities from the ring's alleged leaders, brothers Aaron and Alfonzo Castro. The comics included early issues of both Superman and Batman.

Adams County, Colorado, District Attorney Don Quick said, "It appeared they were working on a startup company for high-end comic books."

At a news conference Aug. 24, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said, "To launder the money, you have to use something that is quick and convenient. In this case, they used classic comic books."

A grand jury indictment released that same day detailed 145 drug possession and distribution charges from October 2008 to earlier in August. In addition to the Castro brothers, 39 other people are listed as defendants and 38 of those people are in custody. The Castro brothers are being held on $1 million bail each.
