For sale: Strange Tales #97, 1962 in 3.0/3.5.

One of the fun gems of the pre-hero Marvel era... this book has a Ditko-drawn story featuring characters "Aunt May" and "Uncle Ben", that came out one month before the release of Amazing Fantasy #15! In this story, Stan and Steve were already noodling around with the idea of a youngish central character (in this case, a young woman) having an older aunt and uncle, making this a cool footnote to Spidey history. The book also has a neat "end of the world" cover & story by Jack Kirby.

 

Condition: The book presents like a VG, flat and glossy with a nice clean cover, but the top staple is cleanly pulled through and there's a few mostly unobtrusive stains and nicks as are visible in the scans. 3.0/3.5 seems just right. Pages are supple & offwhite.

 

I hesitate to call this book "rare", but it's certainly tough to find. One of those issues that's always been cherrypicked out whenever you look through a dealer's stock. There are none on ebay, and I can't remember ever seeing one for sale here. Hate to let it go.

Congrats! This is one of the best covers of the pre-hero run.

 

I often thought that this cover would make a fantastic movie poster!

 

As for the Aunt May & Uncle Ben app. Yes this is the first app. of an Aunt May and Uncle Ben by Ditko...not the Parkers, however.

 

Ditko's standard "old Lady" (who is a look-alike for May Parker) appears in a number of 50's Charltons and in single panels in Atlas books -- typically, she can be found in various crowd and background scenes. There may even be an index at Blake Bell's "Ditko Looked Up" site.

I was thinking about pulling the trigger on this one but I'll have to wait a bit longer to get me a copy...but I will own this book soon! :sumo:
