Ebay payment forms

21 posts in this topic

I just was curious if people were still dealing with Pay-Pal only. I will accept any payment, but has to clear first before I ship. I was also curios if the email from the bidder was legit or Ebay trying to be sneaky

Sorry - I misunderstood your question. I still accept money orders. I probably wouldn't accept a personal check unless I had done business with the buyer in the past with no problems.

I think while eBay prefers that all payments go through paypal, I don't think they would have sent you an email in an attempt to fool you as they still allow sellers to accept the other payment forms.

They don't, though - their "accepted payment policy" page is actually pretty specific:

"Payment by personal check, cashier’s check, bank-to-bank transfers, or money order isn't allowed for most eBay purchases."

and

"Sellers aren't allowed to: Ask buyers to contact them for additional payment methods".

It's only for items on eBay Motors, and in the heavy machinery, real estate and adult sections where you're still allowed to take MO's/personal checks - there are no other exceptions.

Let's step up to the plate on this one and swing at it.

Here is the link to the updated rule set: Checks and money orders no longer allowed It is very long and drawn out, filled with eBay-specific propaganda (lies, statistics, and damned lies).

This is the specific section that everyone seems to have caused the "yes you can/no you can't" confusion:

What should I do if I have long-standing, repeat customers who insist on paying with checks or money orders, even after I explain the benefits of electronic payments and offer suggestions?

We know this may happen occasionally. A seller can accept check and money order payment from a buyer if (and only if) the buyer requests it. We will not take action against a seller who is trying to accommodate their buyer, complete a sale and be in compliance with the policy. Sellers cannot in any way solicit check or money order payment from a buyer. This is considered abuse of the payments policy. Remember also, you can refuse to accept these payment methods. If the buyer doesn't pay, you can file an unpaid item (UPI) complaint. Buyers who insist on paying with these prohibited payment methods in a UPI claim will lose the claim and will not be allowed to leave negative feedback.

So, your listing may not include anything other than "PayPal accepted." The "submit listing" button activates a word search filter on your desciprtion. If you mention money order, the listing is not submitted and you have to change the text. Last I checked, I couldn't even use the title of their notice (because it has the words money order).

Hope that helps!

Larry

If I can convert it into cash, I'll take it - checks, money orders, gold bullion, casino chips, blue-eyed blonde babies, etc.

It may slow down the transaction, but if the buyer doesn't mind waiting for it to clear, I am fine with any method.
