The dividing line is the 1960's

 

There is a huge difference in the average grade of a 1960 comic versus a 1969 comic

Would that dividing line be 1964?

in that area for sure but I would call 64 early and 66 late. 65 could go either way but I would lean towards "early". by 68 no question average grades are better

I would say average grade is as follows

 

1940s - g/vg

1950s - g/vg

1960s - vg/f

1970s - f/vf

1980s - nm minus

1990s - nm

2000s - nm

 

In each case, the early part of the decade would scew to the lower grades and the later part of the decade would scew to the higher grades.

It would also seem that thereis a significant difference in average grades between DC and Marvel in the early years.

yeah I heard the consensus was DC used better paper than Marvel/Timely in the 1940`s but then sometime in the mid-1960`s Marvel used better paper than DC?

any clarification of this?

I am glad to hear the comics have a little overall higher grade than I expected.
