I'm sick of CGC modern books going on ebay for so high.....

43 posts in this topic

Don'tcha love seeing stuff that was in the quarter bin for 10 years suddenly cost $39.95 because it has a 9.8 label? makepoint.gif Talk about buying labels.... I can't believe some of the [!@#%^&^] I see slabbed insane.gif

Better yet the guys that sell moderns for 9.8 and above for 20x cover price.... and then brag that they KNOW what books to send to CGC.... like they have some sort of scary and magical grading precognition that none of the rest of us have. I bet if I got to thumb through the LCS new comic boxes before the doors opened on Wednesday, I could pick out a few gems too. sign-rantpost.gif

The fact that books that came out like 6 or 7 years ago, have no real significance, have a street value of $4, but are rated CGC 9.8 and go for a few hundred dollars on ebay.....Are they really worth that much? (I have no example but this is something that I've seen quite a bit on ebay the past few months) 893frustrated.gif

Hey, I say go at it boys. If a seller wants to take the chance at spending the money on a slab so that he can maybe make some good money, why not? If he can pregrade well enough himself it sounds like a wise business move. However, for the guys buying these books, well, they are the ones that will be sorry some day. On the other hand, if they are more concerned about perfection, and having it confirmed (for bragging reasons or whatever) than they are about value, then who can blame them either? ----Sid

Ill be the first to admit Ill pay up a few $$ if its something I really want...

Recently bought cgc moderns...

Punisher Mini-series #1 cgc 9.2 - 35$

Punisher War Journal #1 cgc 9.8 - 60$

Wolverine #1 (regular series) cgc 9.8 - 100$

All mid 80's books....

However the highest I've ever spent on 1990 and up is about 50$ for a sig series Capt America book in 9.6 . Other than that any 90's book I want slabbed, Ill buy it raw and send it in to get it slabbed (The latest Wolverine series #1 as an example)

Anyone paying over 100$ for something issued in the 90's that isnt a signature series or an incredibly rare variant just isnt using their brains I don't think.

I gotta agree with Bass, if there is a buck to be made so be it, they always say "It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it." so go nuts.

Yep - and if you'd like a slightly safer gamble, go to your local Indian casino and drop $40 on a hand of Pai Gow Poker makepoint.gif

They're collecting labels, not comics. insane.gif

The other day I was checking out ebay and my fiance was looking over my shoulder. A CGC 9.8 JLA was on the screen.... the price was $49 or something like that, and she asked "Isn't that the same comic sitting on the floor next to the Lazy Boy... is it worth THAT much?!?"

I told her, "Yes it's the same book, but mine probably has a crease that you can only see with a microscope, so it's not worth the paper it's printed on." tonofbricks.gif

She rolled her eyes and walked away. She has a point. makepoint.giftongue.gif

I think anybody here is free to get comics graded and sell them for these prices...

If 9.8's are so easy to make, then make them and sell them....

Sure... give me access to unopened Diamond boxes every Wednesday morning and I'll cherry pick the best copies. Doesn't take an expert to do this.

I'm sure that's just what these type of sellers are doing... they have an arrangement with a local shop to cherry pick the new books before they hit the shelves.

Do you actually think they are getting these off the shelves like the other 99% of us have to do ? 27_laughing.gif Or better yet, do you think they actually buy hundreds of copies in hopes of finding 9.8s and up? 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif No way....

no matter how they get them...or what they sell for...

this too shall pass as everyone wakes up to the fact that a 9.8 comics from last week is worth no more than any other 9.0-plus copy for a long time. Maybe in many years, the "good" issues will stand out and be worth more in the nicest shape. Remonds me of chase cards. Once the craze dies - - and the fog of greed lifts, people come to their senses and its over for good.

I think I've hashed this out many a time in the past with joe_collector and others about why I do what I do... if you (in general)don't get it, you don't get it. I have bought as well as sold ultra high grade "for the label", "for bragging rights" "for whatever", I just wanted it and had to have it. PERIOD.

I had the yen to buy at the time, I had the money, I bid and won. End of story. Am I kickin myself in the head, now? NO. I never put myself in a position to regret afterwards when it comes to buying.

So yes, I've paid sick money for a brand new Modern on 9.8 or 9.9 just to have it. I've also sold them at those high prices and that was the market then. I don't hold guns to people's heads to make them pay those prices, the market is there to support it and create the end sale. confused-smiley-013.gif

Some posters on here put selling high grade moderns in the same league of disservice to the comic community/market as knowingly passing off trimmed and colortouched comics as unrestored. sumo.gif

I work a day job and I'm there from pretty much 9 - 6; so when do I get this chance to go pick through hundreds of comics at my LCS? I have no such arrangement with them (they are the same owmers of Donut's LCS here in Northern VA and I can say that I've never submitted anything from my LCS; their Diamond shipments come complete with abuse from their UPS branch) nor do I have secret access to the printer's "back door" to get these MINT copies. NO, it doesn't take an expert to do this, but it does take time to pregrade, capital, quality stock and willingness to risk sending these picks to CGC - if others can do it, they are more than welcome to try. Nothing is stopping them. and the small premiums that people pay on the fruit of your effors is an infintessimally small measure of reward for the effort (not to mention actual costs)put in, IMO.

Yes, do go on...you know this because you have done this yourself or have friends that have these seedy arrangements? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

NO. I have stated earlier - I run a sub service with my local comic shop because I want to support them and buy my readers from there and I buy an extensive list of comics monthly - and I get a 10% discount like everyone else.

27_laughing.gif Or better yet, do you think they actually buy hundreds of copies in hopes of finding 9.8s and up? 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif No way....

I buy at times 5 - 10 copies of a comic thru an online source - then pore thru them , pick a select few and sell the rest in sets or singles or fill PM orders from some forumites. Once I have enough cherry copies for a prescreen, I send it off to CGC...

Yup this topic feels like a old rehashing - I even spent time breaking down several prescreens submission from start to finish here on the forum and complete with percentages rejected and final grades...

sorry for the sign-rantpost.gif

Just gave you five stars for the above.

Not all collectors have the same tastes or wants. Paying less than 75 bucks for 9.8 moderns to complete high grade runs is ok if that is what you collect. I am trying to understand your post. Who are we to tell anybody what is proper to buy regarding moderns. That is like criticizing someones wifes looks. We all have different tastes. The market is what it is and buyers what they perceive the value is. The market price for moderns will continue to be unpredictable. Buying Punisher no 1s ASM 300 ASM 344 361, DC comics presents 26 etc etc at a 9.8 level is pretty smart to me. One last point.

Getting a 9.8 is no walk in the park. By the time a modern gets to the store it has been handled a dozen times. Collecting 9.6s is not a good idea IMO> 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
