Highest graded cgc Action # 1 comming to Comicconnect.

206 posts in this topic

So for those of us out of the loop is this the second highest grade unrestored copy in existance only behind the Mile High?

This is THE highest grade unrestored copy in existence IMO. All else is speculation until the Mile High and any other high grade copies actually get graded and receive a blue label and higher grade.

Considering that one of the people that has said publicly that the Mile High would grade higher than this copy is the person selling this copy, I tend to believe him.

Oh I'm not questioning the veracity of the claim that the Mile High is a higher grade. But until it is actually graded and the label says 9.2/9.4 Universal, this is the highest grade copy. Who knows if the dentist decided to improve the Mile High 20 years ago. Who knows if the Mile High might have suffered some damage that would bring it down a bit since the last time it was viewed by anyone other than the owner. Lots of possibilities as to why the Mile High might not come back with a higher unrestored grade than this 8.5.

That's not to say that it won't come back a blue 9.2 or 9.4. But if we never see it in our lifetime, what does it matter. It's fairly well known that the book isn't for sale for any price and will probably not be graded anytime soon, if ever.

Old label means 2001-2003 submittal right?

The rust might have progressed into the pages by now?

Ticking time bomb if you ask me.

Rust doesn't keep getting worse or migrate if a book is taken out of the environment which led to it in the first place.

All of this rusty staple talk is a lark...high grade books with rusted staples are all over, CGC just doesn't note it on the label anymore like they did back in 2000/2001. They stopped with the label comments a while before they changed label styles because people kept harping on the defects out of context with the overall set of defects, much like you are now.

It should probably be reslabbed as well to get fresh micro chamber paper.

Still... WOW!

Rust doesn't migrate if the comic is removed from the environment that caused the rust initially.

Jeff, how big of a deal is the rust on this book? You'll have to forgive my lack of knowledge on this subject.

Will the rust migrate ever? Under optimal conditions, in a slab, reslabbed, etc...Is the rust retarded forever or will it eventually worsen, even if it takes decades?

Doesn't CGC allow for replacement of staples if you're using staples from the same era? Would that be something that would benefit this book? Would it make it purple label?

I don't know how others feel but rust is a no no for me. And if CGC went so far as to list "rusted staples" I would think I would want those staples gone if I could have them replaced and not plod the book.

Thoughts would be mucho appreciated.

Replaced staples used to get a purple label. Now they get a green qualified label. So they are treated as a major defect and not restoration, even if vintage.

Thanks fellas.

Thanks FF for the migration comments. I've never seen this book up close and have actually never owned a book with rusted staples so I wasn't sure what to think.

Staple replacement receives a green label, I believe.

As far as I know, the rust will never migrate if kept under the right conditions.

Has anyone seen this book in person? How rusty are we talking about? Spotty? Completely rusted? If this book were cracked out and flipped through, anyone think that would be a problem considering the staples?

I only ask because if I buy this book, I fully intend to crack it out and read it. :insane:

I'm pretty sure nobody here knows how rusty the staples are since they're on the back cover...which is why it's particularly stupid to keep harping on it. :screwy:

I've seen the "rusted staples" comment on books with VERY light rust, so light that 80% of people wouldn't notice if CGC hadn't pointed it out on the label. Having said that, the staples could be highly rusty with significant migration to the cover...who knows, probably only Fishler right now. (shrug)

I'm not sure I follow. Is the fact that they are on the back cover (location) of any significance? Or are you just commenting that b/c nobody knows or can see the severity it's much ado about nothing until more info is known?

I would imagine if there was even mild rust migration CGC would have dropped the grade lower then 8.5 given how they hammer stains. So that leads me to believe the rust is not too bad.

Just total and complete guesswork on my part though. Heck, I can't even make out the cert # to check and see if the grader notes make mention of how bad, and or where the staples are rusted.

Anybody got sharper eyes then mine?

Regardless, what an incredible copy.

I think Gator has seen the book in person. Maybe he can weigh in. Or maybe Fishler can put up a back cover scan when trying to sell a $1MIL+ book. Nah, who am I kidding :insane:

The mile high is well known, so I doubt many inside this forum, and virtually none outside it, would consider ungraded synonymous with nonexistent.

But the secondary point -- that it's unavailable -- is also well known, and carries much more weight.

I own a 9.0 with the "rusted staples" comment. The book does have migration to the cover.

I guess I would then ask what you would grade that book without the rust damage?

Oh who cares!!

As you said, let's just wait till we actually know more about the book.

Then again, isn't speculating a prerequisite for becoming a member here?

That 9.0 looks like a 9.2 or 9.4 except for the rust migration.

Technically the prerequisite is that the speculation must be about a topic about which the poster has no relevant information :) If its something that's impossible to prove either way, well that's bonus points ;)

Yeah, if it werent for the staples I would give in a clean 9.2. and thats at least.

CGC will give books with rusted staples grades up to at least 9.2, possibly higher, so we can't say much until we know what defects are present on the book.

I actually am pleasantly surprised that they decided to sell the book in the old label, instead of having it reslabbed to lose the rusted staples comment. For many, the page quality bump would make for a good enough excuse.

I was super close to getting an ASM 1 CGC 4.0 OW-W for a really good price until I called for the notes and found out the lower staple had rust that migrated to the centerfold. That really turned me off the book... especially since it migrated.
