Archie Comics to introduce a gay character

92 posts in this topic

I don't like this.

They should have subtle innuendos instead of coming out and declaring that a particular character is gay.

Do you think the average 8-12 year old would get them? Maybe, but most of the time no. Better to have him come right out then skirt around the issue.

I think the point is to not have to have subtle innuendos. It's a good step to further the acceptance of homosexuals in popular culture.

Settling for subtle innuendos is exactly the opposite of what I believe they are trying to do. That approach would just make the characters sexual orientation a joke, and therefore the character a joke as well.

I thought it would never happen, but Archie will be introducing a gay character later this year.

I'm very excited about this, since there has not been a gay character in the Archie world for well...ever.

Just don't tell Banky Edwards that "Archie and Jughead were lovers".

I am really surprised that there have not been a successful Archie movie made (Real people). They have the options of gearing towards the younger age group or they could do a little more suggestive movie for the older age group. With the popularity of the character over the past 50 years you would think there would be enough fans to make it worth some movie producers while.

I truly believe the people in charge of the Archie property are total idjits. Seriously.

I bought my kids Season 1 of the old Archie cartoon from the 60's and they LOVED it. Like, couldn't wait to get their homework done, showered and into bed to watch another episode LOVED it. They showed it to their friends and they LOVED it.

It is a pretty cool show, and captures the comics and the times almost perfectly. And those Jughead dance sequences are classic. Other than Ronnie's "old south" accent, it's a near-perfect translation.

It was also the Number 1 rated Saturday morning cartoon of that year, so we're hardly alone in liking it.

So naturally we were all anticipating Season 2 and 3, and I pre-ordered them from Amazon. S2 finally arrived, we immediately plopped it in the DVD player... and started to watch an absolutely horrible Laugh-In clone - no stories, no continuity, just lame joke after lame joke with a bunch of ugly live-action shots of drooling children from a fake "audience". We tried a few episodes (all just terrible), and the kids refused to watch anymore and the DVDs remain unwatched to this day.

How could someone have a hugely successful, #1-rated cartoon series that almost exactly translated the comics, then turn it into a horrible Laugh-In clone that was retrofitted, then canceled soon after? How could anyone screw that up?

Not surprising really. Did you see the movie?

I see Archie kinda like Dawson`s Creek,Saved by the Bell or 90210.

While I don't disagree with the body of your post, I seriously doubt the people in charge of Archie today had anything to do with the animated series from the late 1960s, which in addition to being a huge hit also featured a number 1 record( Sugar, Sugar), from a band that didn't even exist.

Did the laff-in clone immediately follow Season 1 or was it a few years later?

Perhaps the Archie you liked was a one and done, as Archie wanted a rights increase after producing a monster hit?

Hopefully, there is a parental warning for parents that do not want their kids exposed to this type of thing. I am sure the last thing some parents want to do is explain why Kevin and another male character are holding hands or kissing. Maybe a parent was waiting to tell their 8yo kid about alternative lifestyles when they got older. I could be wrong, maybe Archie comics are like mainstream superhero comics and are geared toward an adult crowd so it doesn't matter. I don't know. I just hope parents aren't blindsided by this with no warning.

Thanks for posting this. I don't want to get into a big discussion on this, but the whole concept of introducing this into Archie comics is just wrong, but I'm sure I'm in the minority around here.

My thoughts are .....you can't have a gay character without causing every reader to now think about SEX. The innocence will be gone. Archie comics will never be the same. Archie was somehow similar to Gilligans Island hm

No problem. Everyone is entitiled to their own opinion. I just don't like stuff like this creeping into the culture stealthly so parents can't make a choice and are blindsided when their kids start asking questions about these things that they read in a comic for kids. Archie comics have the right to do anything they want, but they should warn the parents of children who will be reading their comics beforehand.

I don't read Archie comics but I am on the side of this being a cool thing.

Somehow I doubt that an Archie comic will be the first time a kid sees 2 men holding hands and asks mommy to explain.

And if it is, so be it, let the parent explain it, just like as a parent they need to explain everything else in life.

isn't this potentially an issue just walking down the street? or even on a lot of television that is on during "kids" hours?

do kids read current archies anyway? seriously, it's almost pornographic, within a six issue story arc archie is getting it on with veronica and knocks up betty (ok, i actually have to read those comics to figure out if the covers have anything to do with the insides...i have been meaning to).

I think that with that logic, kids should think about sex whenever Archie and a girl are together. The innocence shouldn't disappear for anyone except the ones who still think homosexuality should be frowned upon.

I think this WILL help ease kids and adults alike into accepting homosexuality as a normal thing.

Just my 2c
