How can Action 1 not be denoted a classic cover? It's just the most emulated cover of all time.

Is "classic cover" a designation that is used only for non-"key" book? Sort of a selling point for also rans?

Aside from Action 1, I see that D27, MC1, Whiz 2, Pep 22, Batman 1, Superman 1, etc., don't get the designation.

most mega GA keys don't have super great covers IMO. Like a Cap 33 is a better cover than Cap 1 IMO for example....

I actually disagree, I think all of these mega keys have classic covers.

Batman 1

Superman 1

Whiz 1

Action 1

Detective 27

Adventure 40

More Fun 52

Sensation 1

Wonder Woman 1

Marvel Comics 1

Submariner 1

Wonder Comics 1

totally agree here. and there is no way Cap #1 isn't a classic cover, right cross to Hitler.

Which gets back to my point: Sure seems like the phrase "classic cover" is just a bit of verbage Overstreet added to denote a selling point for books that otherwise might not have appeared all that remarkeable.

I assumed it was explanatory info to both assist collectors in finding books they might want and to explain the price. Prior to internet and Gerber, few had a chance to know what the classic covers looked like and, therefore, the notation in the Guide alerted them to the desirability and provided some justification for a price differential relative to the surrounding issues.

The more I look at the list, the more I think its a bit of a joke.

Are there any Kurtzman covers on the list? Why not Two-Fisted 22, Mad 1 or 4, Frontline 7, etc.

How about Frazetta's Famous Funnies covers?

This isn't a list of "classic covers" so much as a list of "classic covers not drawn by top cover artists on otherwise not notable books."

Completely agree.

The last time we had a thread about classic covers I didn't even bother posting as it was easy to see how haphazard the designation was. It ought to be cleaned but I'm doubtful that it will be attempted.

Or Walt Kelly for that matter...

actually I think you need to take some things into account when looking at the OSPG list of Classic Covers

#1 that list is for the most part 20+ years old

#2 it isn't meant to be an all-inclusive list of classic covers

#3 "Classic" is very subjective and so by some estimations classic covers could number in teh hundreds or thousands

#4 the list needs to be updated with new issues

Supes 1 & Action 1 etc are presumed to be classics, so no "classic" designation was needed

although there can be no doubt that as one member posted, the designation was inserted so people who had never seen Hit #5 or Fantastic #3 (are these on the list?) could understand there was a reason that they were priced differently than the surrounding issues etc

why isn't Spy Smasher #2 on the list? well, it was priced separately in the guide already. Plus, I don't think that a consensus was ever taken when many of these were called classic covers 35 years ago, but we all knew they were.

you have to take these lists with a certain grain of salt.. that way they taste better

go light on the butter though

For Lawbreakers Suspense Stories #11, the CGC label has:

"Classic Severed Tongues Cover"

Which always makes me laugh -- as if there are run-of-the-mill severed

tongues covers.
