Overstreet Market Report Observations

37 posts in this topic

With regard to the market reports, I am finding more and more 'reports' containing the following:

1. General Observations (this is useless waste of space)

2. Reports from folks who are not dealers (do we really need another 'market report' from Maggie Thompson or someone working from CGC?)

3. Market reports from contributors that spend the bulk of their space on pimping thier store website/auction site/convention?

I think the editors of the OPG should do a better job of editing out the aforementioned and perhaps identify additional dealers to fill the void in order to add further credence to the Market Reports section.

Finally, since the advent of ebay, online auction sites, and the reporting of sales thereof, it was nice to see a few additional Market Reports from non-North American dealers. more please (thumbs u

How about dealer after dealer trying to talk up modern books in thier market reports, How certain modern books are hot now like Batman R.I.P. but eventually they will end up being last years Secret Invasion or Civil War, no need to spend 20 pages on this stuff. So what if Batman and Robin sells decent it still will end up like Legends of Dark Knight and eventually end up in the dollar bin in a few years, dealers should stick to talking about the real back issue market and not devout the bulk of thier market reports to the modern flavors of the month. 2c

I stopped doing market reports for the OPG a few years back. I just felt they were repetitive and self-serving. Now I unload all of my repetitive and self-serving BS here.

+1

Overstreet should focus on the older books and let WIZARD magazine keep the market on hyping modern books. 2c

As to the other comments:

I think they should report on what is selling well for them, even if it is the same flavors of the month so to speak. If say AF 15, FF #1, SC #22, JIM #83, ToS #39 are what's selling well, that's probably what most of the people reading the guide are looking for guidance on.

I think "Mysterio" said it best about coming HERE to the boards for the best information. If you're curious about any rare or less publicly traded book you can start a thread here and get info. (thumbs u

I had written what I thought was a really good market report this past year (about 4 pages worth)... delving into trends , analyzing different genre's of the golden age, etc... but, an emailing snafu occured and I litterally had to rewrite it in an hour, so it turned out not nearly what I had hoped for...

but, "general" observations , as well as specific observations are exactly what a market report is for... "reporting" what is happening in the market, as seen by the contributor...

citing sales, etc is used to reinforce those stated ideas...

personally, I never mention new comics (though I sell them)...I never mention or "pimp" my store or website (though I have them)... I don't think I have self served in any way in my limited report I did this past year... just trying to contribute my thoughts on the market I follow, much as I do here!

next year, I will have a much better report, with some new pricing analysis (discussed in moderate detail this past SDCC) and I hope that folks enjoy and can take something from what I have to report!

that said, I did resist listing "sales" ,etc, unless they were key to my analysis

Rick;

FYI: Yours was the first market report that I read and I thought it was just an excellent report. (thumbs u

Definitely not the standard OS market report as you talked about the trends and had a lot of good analysis in your report. What really stood out for me was the fact that you was not afraid to bring up the topic of falling prices and then provided several solid examples of this trend.

A nice balanced report on what's moving up and also on once hot books that are now moving back down. Most definitely not the usual hype and one-sided reporting that we seem to get from most of the other OS advisors. :applause:

Rick, reading your OS market report was like reading one of your post here on the boards, in other words, THE TRUTH about the GA market, talking about the hot books being early Actions, pre-Robin Tecs and WWII cover Actions/Supes.

actually, it was "saved", just saved on a computer that died (my laptop)...and, I had emailed it to JC as text within the email , versus as an attached file...and he deleted the email, thinking I had emailed as an attached file he had downloaded, but of course, I didn't...

this year, I am saving as a file, as I put my market thoughts down each month... trust that next years report will be more in line with what I had expected this one to be (thumbs u
