February...

+1 Mid season breaks suck

So what is the point of a mid-season break anyways?

Aside from the cost savings associated with a shorter season episode commitment there are several factors that go into a mid-season break.

1) It avoids the holiday season when, traditionally, ratings go down as people are at parties, with family, traveling, and perhaps not keeping up with programming...especially Sunday programming.

2) It avoids the end of the Football season, the playoffs and does not return until after the Superbowl. This will "fill the void" on Sunday night left from weeks of prime time games. The way may be clear for larger ratings numbers in the football-less vacuum.

3) It puts AMC in line to get a "second premier" episode at the exact same time that Nielsen is doing their February Sweeps...when ratings numbers are used to determine ad dollars and time slot values for advertisers.

Basically, it's money, and if the show does well enough..it's ongoing success and longevity

There is also a nice viewer plus to a mid season break.

We get all the episodes straight, instead of aired sporadically by the networks, like Fox is known for. Look at Glee or House for how not to air you TV Shows.

I like the 7-10 episodes back to back, then a break, then 2 straight monthes of episodes again.

Glee & House have 22/23 episode seasons- point me in the direction of other TV shows w/ 12 episode seasons that have a 3 month hiatus. sons of anarchy- 14 episodes with no break; breaking bad 13 episodes one right after another; justifiied 13 episodes one each and every week; boardwalk empire 13 straight sundays; madmen 13 sundays in a row.

things i don't like:

lori being played as a complete whore

zombies climbing fences, using rocks

them bringing that racist dude with them on this trip in the first place

t-dog????? couldn't he have just been terrance or tyrus or something?

still, while i'd give the first episode an A, i'll give this episode an A-. at worst a B+.

lol well she was in the comics so it makes sense to show it off even more here! I lol at tdog as well I shall now start calling every black guy I see Tdog ... NOT lol The thing that I hated the most was that the zombies used freaking bricks to smash open the windows ...

I wonder when rick is going to use that nade! Something else that was not in the comics so it should be fun when they finally use it ! & yes them bringing along thatI am the leader insufficiently_thoughtful_person was really stupid of them! If these guys were that big of at the camp how come they have not dealt with them already .... its bs ... Oh well... It was still all entertaining bs at least!

i don't mind at all the show being different from the comic. but only if it works.

in the comic there are very few, if any points when i thought to my self, hmm that wouldn't work, those zombies wouldn't act that way,

or hmm that's a cheesy plot line,

and i never ever thought reading the comic, hmm i hate Lori. but in the second episode all those things happened several times.

and it's only the second episode. i hope it get better again.

I wonder where Monstro went...I miss him.

Honestly, none really. Except Breaking Bad which will be two 8 mini seasons for the final season.

The difference with Walking Dead and Boardwalk, Madmen, etc is;

Walking Dead is shot on location most of the time, with heavy special effects, which makes the episodes much harder, and time consuming to shoot.

The only other reason might be financial as well. AMC may just not have the money to produce 13 episodes straight.

The only comparable show is Boardwalk Empire, but that is still shot on a sound stage.

I'm not arguing but AMC cut the budget on TWD by 660,000 an episode.

Anyhow, I see you're point about TWD. There is a lot of work that goes into one episode, probably feels more like producing a movie vs a TV episode...especially with scene with lots of zombies. I was reading it took like 3 hrs to do a zombie.

What huge special effects? The budget was cut tremendously

This first half of the season? The zombies. So pretty much nothing.

I am really hoping the first half of this season was so basic, was so they could save money to do something cost heavy for the second half when they leave the farm.

If the budget cuts were so bad that the first half of this season is par for the rest of the series, I don't think it will be around much longer.

I don't need to see that many zombies running around. I just need a good story. I think it was good so far. Maybe a little slow but it was still an improvement over last season.

I do remember a lot of zombies though. What about when Otis croaked? What about when Shane forced Andrea to learn to shoot at that community? What about in the barn? If you have zombies around each and every corner, they lose their shock effect.

Best five shows CURRENTLY on television (in no particular order):

Breaking Bad

Dexter

Sons of Anarchy

Boardwalk Empire

Good Wife

Justified :baiting:

Mad Men

don't know from the Good Wife but i'd agree on the others

I like Justified and Mad Men also. They would be 6 and 7 for me! :-)

Yeah, true on all accounts. I didn't find there were any scenes that were as edge of my seat as the ones in Atlanta, with the hordes.

On a similar note. When I was looking up the budget for episodes, I found AMC's crazy ideas for budget cuts again. The "Couldn't the audience hear the zombies sometimes and not see them, to save on makeup?" makes me chuckle every time.

I think it's about time to interject a little publicity towards Image Comics in the show. Seems to me that this is a prime time to really let people know about the comic series and to try and draw more people towards that medium. Perhaps a Walking Dead documentary that goes into how it all started (shrug) Heck, mention the TPB's.

I don't know what kind of money Image has to throw towards some ads, but it certainly couldn't hurt and it would help some of the budget concerns. 2c
