Some advice for UK collector please

56 posts in this topic

I don't think you can call yourself a UK collector unless you've had a bad experience with Silveracre

Good point.

I think you've got something here - thinking about the experience as a kind of rite of passage, which you walk away from, but do so a little bit too marked and bloodied.

Actually I was very lucky, or stubborn, with Silveracre.

When I got back into collecting about 7 years ago I decided to sell off all of my DC collection and second tier Marvel bronze collection so I could concentrate on the SA Marvel runs. There must have been a couple of thousand books that I offered to Silveracre and they were kind enough to offer me 10% of what they were selling comparable books for on their own website.

So I passed on that offer and sold them all bit by bit on Ebay over the next 3 years.

I've since bought them all back again though.

:applause::applause:

Kudos for having the strength to do precisely the right thing here by rejecting them, by replacing the thrill of the hunt with a sense of crushing disappointment for them. All too rare, unfortunately.

With my collection, back in '95 he offered me a pittance of the value. Needed the money so I took it.

His whole demeanour changed once we had agreed the deal. the 'friendliness' stopped and he worked like a robot to get the comics in the van and go. I watched him leave with a tear in my eye

The one time that I dealt with Darryl (bought my Avengers # 1), I didn't have a problem. However, a while later there was a thread on the boards showing how badly he'd treated some of the people here so I sent him an email saying that I wouldn't deal with him again....... and I haven't.

He certainly doesn't seem popular. Just struck me as out to maximise the deal for himself. Must be hard work though making money from comics.

Sorry don't have any of what you are lookin for - my collection is almost all US Silver, Bronze and some Golden Age

Mikey

Not really, the deal he was raving about 2 months ago involved paying an old lady £100 for 2 bags full of Silver Age comics, one of which was an Amazing Spiderman 1 in around 7.0 grade.

No idea if he was telling the truth as it seems his game plan is to belittle other dealers at the marts he goes to by bigging himself up.

Something to brag about - taking advantage of old ladies? Loathe to speak badly of anyone but that is a poor show. I can accept he is in business to make money and decided he didn't need to give me a deal but to do that and then be boasting about it is certainly not admirable.

What's Darryl done? I voiced some strong opinions against him here a few years ago but no one else seemed to say anything but now everyone knows what he's really like.

Hey Matt, Good to see you. :hi: I wondered if you wouldn't be back this time cos it had been so long. Hope you stick around for a while, mate. :wishluck:

It's simply the greed I find so off-putting, never a nice characteristic but somehow particular nasty in a hobby people really care about

He's actually stopped doing London marts - I think he realised he wasn't welcome, that or he wasn't making enough cash

BTW, I must recommend a hilarious blog "London Loves Comics"

London Loves Comics

There's some great material on London marts and comic shops....

Is it just me, who's PC is on a go-slow since clicking on this link?

My laptop is still messing around ever since I clicked that link. Did anyone else get that or was I the only one who was stupid enough to click it?

Silver Acre?

Seems he's in the habit of telling people he will sell them books and then backing out of a deal because he continues to shop the books around for a higher offer. Apparently he's done it more than once to board members.

He even came on here a few time to try and defend himself but to no avail.

Plus he overgrades, prices very high (although not quite as high as Key Comics), 'doesn't have time' to send scans of books beyond his stock photos (which are poor), has no manners...

Hey, not stupid, nothing wrong with the site. Are you sure you've not picked up a virus on the free porn sites?

He also doesn't know much about comics other than mainstream keys he buys off old grannies. I've actually bought quite a bit off him for very good prices which felt quite restorative.

The problems started exactly when I clicked the link and I can't blame the porn because that's only on my main PC which hasn't got a problem.
