Hobbit 1st edition

UK 1st editions like this one are very scarce. I wouldn't be surprised to see it sell for north of $10K desite its condition, although I am not sure Heritage is the best one to sell it. Most high end Tolkien collectors peruse Sotheby's and the other more established auctioneers. Not sure how many will see this unless Heritage is advertising it in bibliophile trades.

This is totally sweet - does anyone have any idea what's it's worth? I bid $800 and was outbid.

It should be among the high dollar items in the sale. The high I've seen was a copy inscribed to his Aunt that made something like $80,000 at Sotheby's a few years ago. Even unsigned, low grade copies bring many thousands of dollars.

I paid $1200 in 1988 or so for a fairly nice copy with a water stained DJ that originally came off a different book.I've seen ads for 100K for New condition books, but don't think anyone has paid that much for one.
