But what kind of developmental "trend" does the figures you describe below translate into:

"ex: 2 years ago, a cgc 8.5 Ext tec 27 sold for 80K (privately) and a 7.0 blue sold for $259K (privately)...diff...179K...

this year, the same 8.5 Ext resold at auction for $66K...a 7.0 just sold at $492K...the diff...426K..."

This gap widening - whats that supposed to mean? hm

means unrestored are still increasing in value faster than restored (thumbs u

means restored books are even more affordable. (thumbs u

more affordable relative to unrestored counterparts, but still increasing in price, so generally not more affordable relative to past opportunities to purchase (thumbs u

The 8.5 Ext Tec 27 dropped in price from $80K 2 years ago to $66K this year.

And if they keep on dropping they may actually get affordable again :cloud9:

variable is private sale vs. Public auction....

Sale price is sale price.
of course, but the difference is a public sale price is generally "known" and therefore can have an affect on value perception, where as a private sale, unless reported, is "unknown" and therefore, cannot be used in basic analysis of the market value ...

I will use the 8.5 ext tec 27 as an example of trend...

in 2007, it sold at auction for approx $50K

in 2008, it sold privately

in 2009, it sold at auction for approx 60K

in 2010, it sold at auction for approx 66K

you can clearly see the trend at public sale is up 10% + each time it has been ressold "publicly"...

so, a "sale price is a sale price" is true, but doesn't always tell the entire picture (like the absence of the $80K 2008 private sale price) (thumbs u

Whether data supports it or not, people generally predict that the value of something they want is going to drop until they purchase it, and will begin to rise immediately after they take possession.

That the market considers unrestored books to be more desirable than restored books. :makepoint:

Are you deliberately being obtuse? (shrug)

Not "obtuse" - Just trying to adress the implications of this widening trend.

In other words: How one as a collector is going to make sense of this kind of development (thumbs u

But the action 1 6.5 moderate has been rising steeply. It was a very strong price ...

That does not support the idea of flat or dropping prices like in the case of the tec 27 cgc 8.5.

who said there was flat or dropping prices...just the opposite on average
