Who drew the most covers...

100 posts in this topic

I figured out how to do a better search without the duplicates. These numbers should be more accurate, and did flip the order a bit. Also added Ernie Chan and a couple others. These are just Marvel covers:

Gil Kane - 866

Jack Kirby - 417

John Buscema - 386

Herb Trimpe - 267

Rich Buckler - 209

Dave Cockrum - 153

John Byrne - 151

Sal Buscema - 132

Gene Colan - 129

Frank Miller - 114

Jim Starlin - 102

George Perez - 91

Mike Zeck - 85

Bob Layton - 85

Ernie Chan - 63

John Romita Jr. - 46

Thanks for all your research. As much as I have used GCD, I didn't know you could do searches like this. My suspicion was Kane and from your numbers - it is him by a longshot.

How about DC?

Aparo and Kubert should be front-runners, I would think.

Edited the above numbers in the previous post. Romita Senior was added and is number 2 ahead of Kirby! :o

I'll do DC later.

For DC I gotta think Adams and Kubert are up there, but ya Gil Kane did so much art in the BA especially the picture frame run.

If you were to draw the line at 1976, I'd be willing to bet Nick Cardy had more than either Kubert or Adams.

But Z the BA didn't end in '76 now did it. :baiting:

Don't get me started... :sorry:

Seanfingh knocked one out of the park with Dominguez, coming in at #4 on the DC list! Thanks also to Doctor Svord for remembering SA artist Murphy Anderson also crossed over to the BA for DC.

Who else are we missing for Marvel/DC that did 50 or more covers in the BA, anyone?

How about these three for Marvel - John Severin, Marie Severin, D ick Ayers

They were prolific, but if the BA began in 1970, they will not have a ton of covers. Most were between 1964 and 1969. Although Ayers did do Sgt. Fury covers well into the 70's hm

I knew Papa Joe Kubert would be the top dog for DC...

Aside from the occasional hero and horror covers, he drew literally 90% of the DC war covers from this era. If you include up to 1988 as the end of the bronze era (as I do... it's when the last of the great DC genre titles ended), you could probably add another 100 to his number.

Great artist... and still going!

Not sure if I'm doing the search correctly but from what I see, from 1970 to 1984, John Severin had 72 covers, Marie had 149 covers and D ick Ayers had 107.

Can someone else confirm these numbers?

Confirmed! Great job. John Severin and D ick Ayers did 72 and 107 war and western covers for Marvel in the BA. Marie did 146 covers spanning most genres for Marvel in the BA. All three added to the Marvel list!

The lists below count the covers penciled by each artist. The bold entries are additions to my original 1st guess lists suggested by boardies, or some that I thought of after the original lists.

Who have we forgotten? Any more prolific BA cover pencil artists we have ignored?
