CGC Census Update - What's New?

47 posts in this topic

Just remember the New Highest Compilation list was my idea. hi.gif

Yep, and it's a great idea.

It was a head-scratcher trying to make the database do that one,

but I finally figured it out... look for it in my updates from now on. grin.gif

Interesting. I personally accounted for 5 of the 48 new 10s in the update.

And how many moderns did you need to submit to achieve this statistic?

The total number of 9.8 prescreens was around 270 or so that actually made the trip to CGC during that time period... I also submitted other batches screened at 9.6 and 9.4, but obviously I didn't expect any 10s from those...

And as a rough guess, those 270 were selected from a pool of around 3400 books. My own personal screening is pretty harsh. After my first batch, I have been averaging around 94% passing. So there are clearly some 9.8s that I am rejecting that would have made the cut. But I would rather submit 20 knowing 19 will make it than submit 40 expecting to get between 21 and 33...

If I can figure out a way to post some more complete statistics in a way that won't help my competitors, I will probably do that. Since based on the PM's I receive there is definitely some curiosity.

Hey Valiantman... you may already be putting this list somewhere, but I didn't see it.

What about the top submissions just during the update period? And maybe top-10 or top-20 breakdowns by decade? I don't think year-by-year data would be useful, but it would be interesting to see which Bronze Age books were seeing more submissions lately, and the percentage increases would probably be very interesting. We all know Hulk 181 was submitted more times, but maybe Spotlight 5 submissions are really taking off, or there's a lot more people submitting DD 131 trying to cash in on an auction they saw...

How about starting a new thread about what you're looking for in a 9.8? I.E. What factors cause you to immediately discard it from consideration?

How many of the 9.8s did you actually think could be 10s? Thx.

How about starting a new thread about what you're looking for in a 9.8? I.E. What factors cause you to immediately discard it from consideration?

That's tough, because I certainly don't want to be teaching my competitors anything if I can avoid it. I actually started to do a big post as a photo-essay, showing the procedures I use from unpacking the box to screening the books to bagging them to packing them. I even had most of the pictures taken. But then I realized I may as well join Geraldo in Iraq and start giving away troop positions. If my process has an 85% chance of keeping a 10 a 10, and my competition's method only has a 65% chance I would be a fool to show them how to keep those 10s from dropping to 9.8.

I had intended it as free advice for my fellow forumites on how to pack for submitting to CGC, but then realized I was pulling a Geraldo... foreheadslap.gif

How many of the 9.8s did you actually think could be 10s? Thx.

I haven't seen enough 10s to able to predict that. Once I have seen fifty or sixty of them I might be able to answer that (although I doubt it), but right now all I "predict" when I do my screening is how many will make 9.9 or better.... On books where I submit more than one copy I have no way of knowing which of them made the cut, but for my last couple submissions I have been "expecting" around 11% at 9.9 or better and have been seeing around 13%...

Can you show new titles to the census. Books that were not in the census before.

There are 1,723 books that are new to the census.

Do you want a list of all of them, or is there something you're looking for?

Those are all new titles to the census??? 893whatthe.gif

I didn't think there would be that many new titles added.

Just new titles. Not like another new issue of Action or Superman added to the census.

I guess I'm having a hard time explaining this.
