After 20 years.. Goodbye Spidey

128 posts in this topic

So I have finally quit reading ASM. Marvel switched to 3 issues a month, and it broke me. The stories werent that good, the art was a turnoff, and it was just too expensive. So after 20 years I part ways with ASM. I started collecting this title at the age of 12, my first issue aquired for a $10.00 bag of comics from the paperboy which included ASM 300 (my first spider man comic). I fell in love with the McFarlane art and was an avid reader throughout the Larson era, which shortly after saw my exit from comics. Mix in a few years later a rabid lust for completing runs, and you have 2 long boxes of ASM.. So after the past 4 years of rebuilding, filling, and reading moderns it is over. It was fun while it lasted, but I cant take it anymore.

Goodbye webhead. I will enjoy selling those long boxes. :cloud9:

When that "Brand new Day" :censored: started it was time to call it a day. I collected the entire run up to that.... but now it's all over

Also, Spidey is no longer 3x monthly now.

Since when?

About a month or two ago, now twice a month.

My Bad

I must have missed the announcement

I thought it was always 3 times a month

For my money, the Roger Stern/JRJ era was the pinnacle for the series, the art and story were never better.

I loved that era as well. It's my personal Spidey golden age. :cloud9: Although, in terms of artwork, Romita sr is my favorite.

Was that the early 1980's? That was a fun time to read. It was also the first time I ever had a subscription.

I quit after "Man Mountain Marko". Having a big strong guy fight Spider-Man was stupid beyond belief and I had better things to do with my 12 cents. I have not purchased one off the stands since.

It would be interesting to graph Spider-Man high points and low points in both storytelling and marketing.

I agree that #70's to mid #90's lacked a little imagination for me but then I dislike that entire era, even in movies for some reason. Maybe the whole psychedelia thing turned me off.

#96 to the #160's were a lot of fun to read with lots of new stuff going on nearly every issue.

Then it became kind of tacky for a while to me and rebounded in the #200's.

Yep, started early 80's. I had a sub from 211 up to 236. Just missed 238 doh! I still have all my sub copies. 229-230 was a killer two issue arc. Spidey Vs the Juggernaut. Great, great stuff.

The issue with Fusion was the first issue I ever got via subscription.

That juggernaut read was fantabulous!

I started with issue 58....and like conditionfreak, I lost my passion for the book with 121-122, although I bought a few more out of habit, finally stopping with the flood of Punisher issues that trumpeted the darkness of the BA. I preferred the off beat, bizarre, fun oriented stuff of the SA. I got back in twice more with the Romita Jr. stuff for a while and then again with McFarlane. I guess that angst is what always made ASM tick....but over the years I think balance was lost. I can understand Pat's decision to stop, but I hope he takes time to be sure before he sells off long boxes full of the stuff he DOES care about. GOD BLESS...

I'm no quitter! (tsk)

I'm enjoying the latest issues and look forward to Slott "owning" the book rather than sharing it. There have always been peaks and valleys but after coming out of the 3 times/month schedule, I see better times ahead.

229-230 - 'Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut' - gets my vote for best Spidey story ever. It's a two issue expansion of the qualities seen in ASM 33.

Why does everyone hate Bagley, I didn't think he was that bad. I always thought Erik Larsen was much, much worse. Though he did draw MJ with a nice big rack! lol as a teen I sure enjoyed that.

I like Bagley. Steady, average work. I'm not sure how you can hate Bagley. To me he's the artist equivalent of a Honda Accord - very much center of the Bell curve.

I hated Larsen's Venom, with the tongue and the slobber. He took the menace the TM had drawn the character with, and turned it into a caricature.

Yup, Bagley was your typical journeyman. Reliable and getting the job done. I personally think his work evolved nicely and his Ultimate Spider-man work was just as strong and evocative of his era as someone like Ross Andru was of his.

When I think of great Spidey art in the 2000's, I think of Bagley's run on USM.
