I suppose you think it would have been better if I said that I "ellipsed" the tear.

I want to know where you thought the tear was. Top edge where the distributor spray is? Or the outside edge about half way down?

 

I've circled the area where I saw the tear.

 

My thinking was that it was too easy to guess 9.6/9.8 so I was thinking of what they would do with a curve ball (9.0 or 9.9). It didn't dawn on me that the book would be a straight forward grade.

For me, heads was a tear/rip and tails was a production crease.

I saw that but enlarged it didn't look remotely like a tear, and personally, I was far more concerned with that stain/production ink defect right below it. I just picked scanner artifact/production ink defect and graded it as it lay.
