Man that sucks! Glad your son is ok though.

Similar thing happened to my sisters old house.

When the furnace gets blocked or clogged somehow it's called a "blow-back"

and its basically like your house is spray painted with soot.

Furniture ruined and walls/ceilings all repainted!

YES! That's the term the ServPro guy used...a blow-back. Naassssty stuff

 

Another term they use is a "puff-back". We had a minor one about 15 years ago in an old house we used to own. We used Serv-Pro then, and were not thrilled with them, but they were a smaller company then compared to what they are today. They told us we were very lucky it was minor. Now I know how lucky we were. Best of luck with the clean-up!
