In 1981 , my parents and I had a blowback from our furnace and it coated the ENTIRE house from the curtins to the toilet paper to EVERYTHING!!! It took 9 months to clean it all up. My only advice is to make sure the people seal the ducts in the house with duct sealer.... It is a chemical that will bind the soot that is still in the ducts. Because even if they clean the house, the minute they turn on the new system you will get the old soot will start to blow over everything again. They have sponges that will clean the stuff up pretty well. Best of luck with the situation.
