Maybe a stupid question, but why do the larger pieces look like they're split up into quarters?

These were done for Marvel Masterpieces Card series, so the pieces were done on 4 seperate cards. Pretty good detail for such a small are to work on, he said the X-men #1 1990's gatefold gave him the fits.
