What's this ASM 1 worth?

14 posts in this topic

I've got a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 (that's good).

But it's a PLOD (that's not so good).

Details (verbatum from the case):

Apparent 6.0 Slight (P)

Restoration includes: cover cleaned. (ALL 3 EDGES OF COVER TRIMMED)

Cream to off-white pages.

To add insult to injury, "COVER TRIMMED" is in bold print in the upper

right of the paper label, and on the small paper strip that runs across the

top of the case.

The trimming is not evident for the top and bottom of the cover. The cover

matches the paper nicely. The trimming on the right of the cover is slight,

but noticable (I had always just assumed it was cut oddly when it was

printed. Yes, I am a insufficiently_thoughtful_person.). Sorry, got no scan.

And, for a 6.0, it's got great eye appeal. It looks much better than

that. I've got a couple of 6.5 books that look much worse.

Any ball-park guesstimates on what this puppy is worth? Some CGC 6.0

copies have sold various places, in the $1800 to $2500 range. Does the PLOD

take off just a bit of the value? A third? Half? More than half? Yikes. Could

I trade it for a cup of coffee?

Thanks,

gozer

Ah, Tibor, how many times have you saved my butt?

Ok, a collector I know (no baloney) has a 9.4 FF #1 with slight pro restoration (I think he said some interior spine reinforement). What would the price ranges for that puppy be? I have not seen it, but he says its a beautiful book.

How did it get a slight P? Steve told me last weekend that trimming always gets an Amateur resto notation. I believe he said it trumps other professional resto in terms of the label.

You beat me to the punch. Was just gonna ask how a trimmed (and three sides) got a Pro Resto designation.

Hey Mike -- weren't you walking right there with us in front of the Moscone Center when we were discussing this? I could have sworn you were. Steve said they always give trimming the amateur designation.

Steve said they always give trimming the amateur designation.

Do they do that specifically just to [!@#%^&^] Danny (the amateur) Dupe off?

Well, his name did come up during the discussion. Something about him being at the lower end of the skill level of people who trim books. But Steve seemed to indicate that no professional restoration artist worth the title would trim a book. They'd add pieces instead. Hence the amateur designation.

Which reminds me -- did we ever decide whether the guy who started this thread was legit or not? The "pro" resto label on a trimmed book has me wondering, although it's possible that CGC just wasn't consistent on this one example. confused-smiley-013.gif

Sir, are you casting doubts on the marital relationship of my dear mother

and honorable father preceding my birth? Does your calumny know no

bounds?

I think we shall have to meet on the dueling field at dawn! Name your second.

If you are trying to imply that ... what? ... oh ... hmmm ... all right. Never mind.

The book's bar code number is 0091300002.

"Slight (P)" and then later "(ALL 3 EDGES OF COVER TRIMMED)"

That would make an interesting thread though -- "The best way to spoof

the boards with a fake post." What's the best stick with which to poke the

ant hill? On automobile groups, the best sure-fire topic is "I think that the 55

mph speed limit is a GREAT idea!" If I were going to start a fake thread here,

I would either claim to have one of whats-his-name's remaining DC comics, or

maybe have "proof" that CGC was manufacturing 9.8 golden age books at a

secret printing plant in Guatamala (they need special jungle oils to age the paper).

Actually sir, we found the jade monkey; it was in your glove compartment.

The reason it was given the slight professional label is because it had its cover cleaned. If it had just been trimmed on all 3 sides and that was it, it would not have received slight, it would've just been restored. However since there was other restoration done to the book other than the trimming, it received a slight professonal label based on how much restoration work was done to the book not including the trimming.

As for what the book is worth, Hey, if you want to sell it to me for half of $1800, I'd be glad to give you $900 for it! Hey.. I'll even be generous and make it an even $1,000 smile.gifthumbsup2.gif
