I believe it is the low quality of your scan. This is a beautiful copy with no fading. I use an HP 7450 scanner, which does a fanatstic job of accurately representing colors, without amplifying hues or tones.

 

I've owned several copies of this issue over the years, and one or two have been brighter, but none as defect-free.
