O Holy Grail!

18 posts in this topic

I've been trying to put together the pages from Howard the Duck #9 for a few years now. Love Gene Colan and Steve Leialoha's work on this book, and love the Canadian theme of this issue.

I've been able to put together 5 interior pages so far, and I know who has two other interior pages (including a full page splash), the 1st page splash, and the cover.

I had pretty much given up on the cover and 1st page splash. The owner never, never sells or trades any of his artwork. I've discussed the cover and 1st page with him, and he said he would consider trading them for another cover and 1st page splash from HTD #1-10, but those pages are impossible to come by.

So I was stunned and shocked when I received an email out of the blue last week offering the cover to me.

My first OA cover, and it's my grail of grails.

A sweet holiday gift to myself.

Congrats on obtaining your personal grail!

...although I'm somewhat sure "Niagara Falls" is spelled wrong on the cover :gossip:

Yeah, if this cover had been produced 20 years later, I could believe that it was intentional (Niagra / Viagra... beavers, et al), but this was clearly a mistake. It's spelled correctly on the interior pages.

One of many Bronze book I bought off the stands. Great cover then and just as good today! Congrats!

Agreed! You know,I think the OA is so much better than the final printed cover. The brown colour used for the beaver was so dark, all the inking detail was lost. So great to finally see Gene and Steve's line work.

Late to the party but congratulations Andrew!

You must be walking on air. My grail cover is not an expensive one and I know exactly where it is but the owner will not sell it. I'm hoping I get that email one day as well.
