OT: Sportscards Help?

12 posts in this topic

I buy a pack of sportscards here and there and pull the rookies and inserts or perhaps a big star that I like, then toss the rest of the cards. After doing this for the past 10-15 years I have amassed a box of about 300-400 cards.

They're rookies, jerseys, autos, refractors, numbered rookies, numbered stars, patch cards, and so on. I think there's even a printing plate in there.

I really don't keep up with sports to the extent that I used to. I watch a few games a year, but wouldn't know or care who's hot or not. I honestly buy them because I used to be addicted to busting packs and I just like to see what the new cards look like every now and then.

The mix is probably about 60% football, 35% baseball, 4% basketball, and there are a few old Nacar cards in there.

My question is this...what's the best way for me to sell these? Are any of you guys into sportscards and have an idea of what I could do with them?

I thought I would add that I don't want to sit and go through these and pluck out the few that might be worth something. I just want to sell them all in one lump.

Thanks for any ideas you might have.

The ones that are rookies, jerseys, autos, refractors, numbered rookies, numbered stars, patch cards should be sold separate from the common ones. There is a big market for them depending who your players are. Ebay is still the way to go.

Do some studying as if you got some real good ones you might want to get them slabbed before you sell them.

Here are some card forums for more info

Buying sports cards these days is a lot like scratch tickets, very addicting to some and the chase cards could be quite a value, but if you dont get the good stuff, well you know what a loser scratch ticket is worth, right? your cards may be worth a bit more.

I would suggest take your cards to the barnnes & noble and sit down in a comfy chair with a copy of beckett (they are $7 now) dont buy it, just look up you prices on your cards to get a better understanding of what you got and if there is anything thats worth anything. List it as a lot on ebay highlight the good with photos you title should include LOT Auto Sig swatch 1/100 HOF and what ever key words may attract buyers.

Depending on how old the cards are and who the rookie is and since it sounds like you pulled these right out of the wax packs, you may want to consider slabbing. Everyone and their brother knows that the sports card markets crashed quite sometime ago. However just like allot of modern comics and even more so with cards, if you sell them raw NM+ you get peanuts, but if the right comic is slabbed 9.8 its a whole different story.

Case and point at one time I had a raw VF/NM Michael Jordan fleer rookie card. I was offered basically a pittance for it. However a slabbed BGS 9.5 Michael Jordan fleer rookie still rakes in over $8K. There was another one like this that recently sold for nearly $9K as well.

I am sure you saw this one, but for everyone else this particular Tebow rookie has been scorching. If you have it and they pull the upset this weekend, you seriously might want to slab it.

A BGS slabbed 9.5 just sold for over $1K and this was before the OT touchdown pass.

The PSA forum is a very good place to start if you want to avoid the eBay route. The only problem with modern stuff is that there's practically no demand with the exception of maybe the auto or really low numbered inserts. Even the hot players, the regular issue cards are fairly cheap and plentiful.

is a lot like scratch tickets,

Have you by chance bought any of the new $30 games? Just curious. You would think for that kind of coin every ticket would be a winner to some degree.

I'd rather go to the track and make the $30 last a bit longer
