SA Feb Heritage Auction -- Curators, etc.

78 posts in this topic

Hey all!

I figured Jive may have done this sooner or later, but I thought I'd start up a thread for the February Heritage auction given that today (and tomorrow and Friday) will be the final bell for many nice books.

Now that the "Curator FF's" thread in CG has meandered around to the point of satire, perhaps a fresh start would be nice...and while I do think several of those books are a bit overgraded, there are some real gems as well. :luhv:

My story involves nine bids on Curator FF's with two sticking until today's live auction. I'm basically at my max on both books already, so it may well be that I walk away with nothing. If others are having better success, however, whether on the Curators or anything else, please feel free to share. I'd love to see how collections are progressing.

Thoughts?

good luck and I think coo coo puff prices are going to be breach on many books at that auction. I am watching a few and not bidding.

I do notice that the ASM twin cities #1 9.2 was the same one that was 9.0 when it was auctioned off 6 months ago.

I was not as blown away as I thought I would be with the Curators that I saw in person but the issues I have with them have been discussed in the General thread. There are certain aspects of the books that I saw in hand that were fantastic and the FF #5 really stood out to me. Perhaps my expectations were too high in general though. I saw the FF #55 CGC 9.9 in hand once, and wasn't blown away by that copy either. Regardless, these books are going to shatter records. I think if I was a HG FF collector, I would want at least one of these in my collection despite the staple issues. I understand the enthusiasm and this is an exciting day!

I`m still high bidder on one of the FFs, but I don`t expect it`ll come anywhere close to winning.

I`m particularly intrigued by the #15, which is just flat out gorgeous, but clearly the bidding on the 9.8s is going to be out of control and well beyond the reach of anyone who`s not a fanatical FF collector. For that copy in particular, I can`t even guess what it`s going to go for.

Maybe Jurgens didn`t do such a great job of storing them.

While I am now primarily a GA guy, SA FFs will always have a special place in my heart. That being said, the prices some of these books are already fetching is just nuts IMHO. Of course, we know some of the usual suspects inthe 9.6/9.8 rarified air can bid without a second thought, but man, a run of the mill early FF in 9.8 fetching $20-$30k is just a wacky concept to me, Curator Pedigree or not. Since many Spideys have been selling at those levels for years, I know I shouldn't be surprised, but its the old cranky guy in me trying to get out. :preach:

If I were to offer a word of advice, it would be to wait. Some of these books will reappear in the market in the next couple of years, and surely sell for a discount. I just can't see getting caught up in the bidding frenzy today.

Jive --

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the 'just wait it out' strategy. I bid about GPA on several of these books and was beaten out, but that's neither a surprise or a disappointment....some I may see again for a lower price, and the 9.8 copies I can't really afford anyway.

That said, I love the Curators in general and hope I can win at least one...the ones I bid on feel important to me...but if not, there's always another opportunity.

Just look at the Comiclink books, which have a few nice offerings as well. Or just wait for the May auctions, when we can rinse and repeat in the SA ad infinitum.

Stay patient, my friends.

Dan

The 5.5 went for insane money but i looked at that book long and hard and it is a spectacular copy for the grade. Much like the Janowicz copy broke a record a few years ago as a 6.5, I don't think another 5.5 will fetch that price anytime soon. There is creasing on the book but it is impossible to see so the book literally shows like a $50,000+ book. If that book went to a collector somebody owns a copy with killer eye appeal.

I think there were some relative bargains with these Curator FFs. Yes, the 9.8s went for some huge numbers. But some of the 9.6s and 9.4 were pretty reasonable in the end. The 9.8 #41 for $2390 and the 9.6 #43 for $2031 makes me sorry I didn't toss in some bids. I'm also a bit surprised with the hammer price of the #25 in 9.6.

Insane is right. Totally, and completely insane. Someone paid strong 7.0 money for a 5.5. The fact that there were two people chasing that book makes it even more amazing.

Personally, I'd rather pay 6.5 money for a 7.0.

Agent, what did you grab? :applause:

I had put in bids on the FF #11 (extremely hard in HG) and the #48, which looked spectacular. I ended up winning the #11 for too much money and losing the #48 to the live auction. Ah well!

What's with all the love for the 9.4 FF5? It sure as heck is a generous grade with all the spine stresses that break colour.

Dan you must have seen this book up close...what would you grade it?

unless i missed something, which is possible, the Curators went for a scontch over half a million. makes me wonder what the entire collection would be worth today, and realise that the older pedigrees have a lot of cachet beyond what more recent ones bring. taking into consideration that there have been a few pedigrees recently that have been less than spectacular in some ways

All Star #4 and FF#6 :) Paid way more than I wanted for the FF6 but wanted it. I actually tried to lower my internet bid but they don't accept changes.

Paid a lot less for the #4 than I was expecting and bought both at my MAX prices.
