OT - Saw "Super Size Me" today

yet another bit from the movie. the guy was showing pictures of famous people to children and asking them who they were. he showed george washington and 2-3 of the 5 knew who he was. he showed a picture of jesus to them and 4 of the 5 didn't know who he was and 1 guessed that it was george bush ("no. but that's a good guess." - one of my favorite lines.) ALL 5 knew who ronald mcdonald was when he showed them the picture. and, four people standing in front of the white house couldn't properly recite the pledge of allegiance but, at the drop of a hat, could recite the "big mac song."

The big mac song part is disturbing... It seems bizarre that a person can know that (all I remember of it is the lettuce, cheese part), but now our pledge of allegiance. Sad. As for the kids... how old were they? I can see young children not knowing who George Washington is... As for the picture of Jesus... do we know if their families are even Christian? If they're not then why would they now his picture at a young age?

Steve:
I'm gonna try to have sex while I am drunk and blame my lack of performance on alcohol.

dillmeister:

Steve, Im available if you need help making this documentary. insane.gif

Aaag! BEGONE mental image! BEGONE!!!

(truly sign-offtopic.gif here but an african-american who moves here from africa will live 9 years longer than someone of african-american decent who's born here. but, that same african person would live 8 years less than the average american born african-american if they stay in their country. so there is some upside to living in america.)

Honestly, I think it might just be the fact that they do not take things for granted like people who are natives of the US. I know that is a lame theory, but if you know someone who is an immigrant from another country, they tend to be more thankful for the little things that we all take for granted.

and we all know it is the little things that make life so much nicer/easier...hence, a longer life.

...then again, I might be whacked out of my melon. It just seemed like a plausible thoery.

And Apoth.. I am sorry you dont want kids.. I didnt think I did either.. life changes I guess..

Anyhow.. I think we get a tax break as parents because of all the extra money we have to spend to boost the economy.. to keep our kids fed, clothed, entertained, and educated.

So I can feel your frustration about having to pay taxes for things that you feel do not affect you.

But isnt it a small price to pay to live in a City that has an education system in place as opposed to having only those that can afford school pay for it, and those that dont... might just be trying to rob you because of their lack of education.

The tax breaks are the only thing that I have a Serious problem with. It may seem that parents pump more money into the economy by feeding, clothing, entertaining, etc. their children, but that doesn't exactly hold up. While I don't live beyond my means I definitely spend just as much as I would if I had kids. The only way to spend more than I do now is if I lived beyond my means. That being the case the economy doesn't lose anything by me not having kids. It still doesn't make sense that I wouldn't get a tax break. I honestly believe that it comes down to our government trying to force their ideas of family values on us. It tries to show an incentive for having the stereo typical family. confused-smiley-013.gif

And as for the idea of paying for schooling to help those who can't really afford to pay for it themselves... maybe they shouldn't have had the kid in the first place. I know that sounds harsh, but I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't have kids if you don't have the ability to support them without help.

I say give me MORE tax breaks.

I am glad that I have had a good 13% dropped off my damn taxes...NOTHING irks me more that people braggin about over taxing me....oops, I mean "Budget Surplus"!!! 27_laughing.gif

Every time I hear "Budget Surplus" I picture a politician standing in front of a HUGE mountain of cash saying "see this huge pile of cash....IT'S YOURS!!!" and then laughing insanely! All a surplus means is that you are being taxed far beyond the needs of the bloated government...and they are stockpiling it.

The only real AND fair solution would be to DROP all income tax all together and simply have a National sales tax. Like say a 5% sales tax ( no other tax ). Quit taxing people just for the right to live.

People that are poor buy things that poor people buy...so if they spend $1,000 of their income a year on zoo-zoos and wham-whams, they pay $50.

Rich Mo-Fo's that buy things rich people buy will alsot pay accordingly...they spend $10,000,000 on Yachts, Bentleys, Rolls, Rolex they pay $500,000 in taxes.

The Government will be given that money to operate. If they can't live within their means, figure it out. If we allocate money for roads...we better get roads or we hold their feet to the fire, plain and simple. If they don't have enough money? Tough doo-doo, do what WE have to do, figure it out.

If you eat junk and get diabetes, or smoke and get cancer etc etc, then YOU must pay out of YOUR own pocket for your medical treatment! Not me. Okay? are you cool with that? SO if that person who did not care to take care of themself cant afford to pay for his own healthcare, he gets none. The rest of the community/country/government will not pick up the tab for that person's lack of willpower. If this were in effect I think people would think twice about eating [!@#%^&^] and smoking etc.

That's not how everyone got diabetes. mad.gif For your insolence, you must pay for my insulin, syringes, test strips, blood glucose monitor(s), and bi-annual trips to dieticians and specialists!

And I only accept money orders/cashiers checks.

Says the person who doesn't have kids. The first thing you'd cut back would be the crack - you have NO IDEA what kids cost, plus all of the attendant costs. I hate to be an [!@#%^&^], but you can't even be having this argument if you don't have kids, because you have no frame of reference. It would be like me discussing tampons.

For a national sales tax to work, it'd have to be around close to 25%... not the 5% you're throwing around. We already pay over 8% sales tax in California.

Right on Donut.

One of my true beliefs is that having kids is the best cure for avoiding spending your whole life with your own head stuck up your [!@#%^&^]. As evidenced by the whining exhibited in this thread. Come on guys......go plant a tree or something! Geez, can we be a little more self-centered and whiney?

Why can't I have the arguement? How exactly are kids going to make me spend more money than I already do? I can't. I don't have more money to spend. How are kids going to up what I spend? Would I change what I spend it on? Absolutely. Will I spend more? No!... there's no more to spend. Is this a hard concept?

You are right on one thing... I am self-centered for the most part. I do bring the fiance into the fold, but beyond us I probably don't care as much as "parents" do. Is this a good thing? Probably not, but I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing either. Not everyone can care about the whole world.

As for the whiney comment... does every complaint qualify as whiney? I was just posting my views and complaints after someone else made complaints I don't agree with.

Ahhh F it... who wants pie? insane.gif
