Counterfeit, Bootleg, and Otherwise Not-Quite-Legit Comic Books
2 2

34 posts in this topic

The power of comic books is so strong that some are tempted to misuse it.

Post your re-covered, poached, pirated, pilfered comic books.

Many comic books that were supposed to be returned or destroyed after their newsstand shelf life instead found use as promotional items for local businesses. They slapped on a new cover and called it theirs.

Although some re-covered comics may have been legitimate, many of these homebrew bootlegs were supposed to have been destroyed.

Found a few of these. Will dig up more if there is interest.

From Keilman's Shoe Store in Tamaqua, PA, here's Here's Howie #15 from 1954.

From American Juniors and Haiman Shoe Store in Newton Centre, MA.

Looks like these greedy guys just threw a chunk of Dell's Giant Western Roundup #5 from 1952 between a cover. A big giant like that, they could rip apart to make a bunch of giveaways!

Dare you to look at that cover before bedtime. Sleep tight!

This one has a covered copy of Bobby Benson's B-Bar-B Riders #5 from 1951 inside.

You can smell the Goldenrod Butter on the fresh ...

I have a bunch of similar examples but I think this is the only one I have scanned in at the moment.

Many of these examples were from children's shoe stores for obvious reasons.

This one contains Superman #106 (July 1956).

I don't believe I have this one anymore. Probably in 143ksk's collection now. IIRC, the interiors were an issue of Candy.

I do have still one in my collection and the interiors are actually a March 1952 comics :) I might scan it later.

Alright, it bugged me so I got it out.

It's another one from the same manufacturer but a different store outlet.

The inside is issue # 2 of Uncle Charlie's Fables, March 1952 -

I was waiting for the right forum to post this and here it is. I have 13 different comics like this. They all have blank inside covers and some have no indica. I showed all 13 to Richie Muchin in the Philly comic con and it blew his mind. He said he had never seen anything like it. This is as bootleg as you can get!

No, this is the only superhero interior that I have. Some others are Leave it to Beaver and Casper just off the top of my head. I don't know what superboy issue the interior is.

I have a collector friend (Steve Brewster) that has a copy of this same book that has the Weatherbird Shoes sticker or stamp on the front cover. An odd book to pick as a giveaway to the kiddies, if that is what Weatherbird was doing with em.
