Doug Schmell cashing in his vaulted massive collecion. Poll: Is this the top?

Not directed to lou_fine, but the stupid in this thread is building quickly.

I assume by your comment that you believe that all high grade comics have already been graded by CGC and there is nothing worthwhile left to grade on this entire planet.

I believe that your comment is a lot more irrational than mine's. :baiting:

What puzzles me is way he is auctioning everything at once? If it were me I would break all the runs up into separate auctions over a years span. For example in the July Heritage auction he should have just put his Avengers run only in that auction. I think he is without a doubt flooding the market in his move to sell everything at once.

I wouldn't think he needs the money that bad, but maybe he does.......

Either way IMO a very bad move to sell it all at once.

Recent history suggests otherwise. The collections featured in the last couple of Heritage Signature Auctions have done extremely well by being offered all at once. It was even pointed out earlier in this thread that many of the Twin Cities books are fetching alot less at scattered re-auctions than they did when first brought to market all at once by Heritage.

I seriously doubt few if any of the early ultra high grade SA Mavels that Doug is offering will sell for a bargain strike price.

Yes, looking at some of the recent auction results, I would agree with your opinion. (thumbs u

For example, just take a look at the Church run of Thrilling Comics which went for astonomical prices during the last CC auction. This is normally a third-tier title at best and would be lucky to see a mutiple to guide at the best of times.

Clearly, you haven't been following the Nedor market for the last few years. Multiples of Guide (1.5x +) are the norm on many of the books in the run, not the exception. And we're talking non pedigreed copies here. The collecting pool as a whole may be shallow (perhaps a dozen to 18 serious collectors), but there will never be enough supply to equal even that limited demand.

That's discrimination.

Being stupid is not a protected class. Discrimination is permitted, perhaps even encouraged.

I saw several big dollar Twin Cities books that just sold for half or less then their original HA hammer prices (when you factor in the commission) in this C-link auction.

I don't know who the consignor(s) was/were, or even if they were the same person who bought the books originally, but that's a pretty steep decline from one year to another.

Same thing happened with a bunch of the Billy Wright GA books, despite the hype-machine that is Mmehdy pronouncing them the greatest investment since tulip bulbs. It's like when a legendary coach leaves/retires - you don't want to be the guy that follows the legend, you wanna be the guy that follows the guy that follows the legend. (thumbs u

Similarly, or not, I'm just hoping to pick up some of the detritus from the upgraders downgraders upgraders downgrades. hm

Matt Doherty? :slapfight:

I meet you a Matt Doherty, and raise you a Ron Zook! ^^

Doherty was after Gutheridge

Yeah, I think this auction is going to do very well. The question in my mind is whether it will pull enough money out of the market to give me a chance at bargains elsewhere, either shortly before or after. hm

Probably not. I suspect that my best hope is decent deals in the sales threads here when people start selling undercopies. :D

Unfortunately, from a buyer's perspective, this is accurate.

Yes, I have been following the Nedor market a bit.

I realize that nice copies of Thrillings are indeed selling at a healthy premium to guide as comfirmed by your (1.5+ guide), but not generally at a multiple to guide which to me means 2.0 or more to guide. And most definitley, not at the 7X or 8X guide which some of the Thrillings were able to get in the last CC auction.

BTW: I believe the multiples to guide with respect to the Nedors would be more towards the Exciting's and Startling's, as opposed to the Thrilling run. hm

Wouldn't high grade Marvels be fish in a barrel if you had Cameron or DiCaprio's resources?

DiCaprio is definitely a collector. There is rumour that he likes Marvels and Timelys. I believe he purchased a highest graded Marvel Comics #1 years ago from Comiclink (filter81's old copy) but I don't know how accurate that is. I think a boardie also recounted how he bought a Cap #1 from a comic store.

More well known is that he frequents Comic Con, specifically the Silver and Gold comics pavilion.

and he smells like an astray and his breath stinks...but he did buy a comic from me 2 years ago, I believe ...whoop whoop

These books are different, they are the cream of the cream...the best there is...you have one shot only on this, I do not SEE any press, reslab, and back on the market for 60 days here on the highest grade marvels.

Mitch;

I would agree with your statement here if all of the true high grade copies on this planet have already been graded. To me, CGC highest graded copy is just a transitory state as you do not know what is around the corner and still sitting out there waiting to be graded.

In addition, the comic book witch doctors are improving their hidden restoration techniques as time goes on and before you know it, you could see more 9.6's or even 9.4's being magically and quietly transformed into 9.8's or what have you.

What we see here today is not the end of the line for uber high grade SA books and even more so, for uber high grade BA books. hm

Yeah, Lou thinks he's cute but she hates the fact that he smokes and doesn't keep in shape (little pot belly on him).

I have an advantage. So far.

Gutheridge was basically an extension of the Smith reign. If Ron Zook had achieved the equivalent of 2 Final Fours in 3 years, he might've stuck around at Florida a bit longer, Meyer certainly benefitted from his recruiting abilities.

the 687 books collection vs billys 330+ should be an interesting contest..did we ever get a final total on the BW collection.....I know it was over 3 mill and that would make dougs books have to average 4,366.81 per book at just three million....I think billy will come in first.
