The first appearance of Boba Fett is an interesting case. The very first time he was seen in a piece of sequential art is different than his first appearance in comic books. He first appeared in Russ Manning's syndicated newspaper strips, which appeared prior to the theatrical release of Episode V. It was not until 1994, however, that these strips would appear in comic book form, in Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures #9.

 

Thus his first appearance in comic books is the Marvel adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back, while his first appearance in comics wouldn't be put into book form for about another 15 years.

 

They are referring to "Marvel Comics Illustrated/Marvel Illustrated Books (1970)" which was a 221 page trade paperback. But it was not TPB sized, but rather sized like a paperback novel.

Star Wars #42 was the first comic book appearance of Boba.

And that paperback sized book was reprinted as Marvel Super Special #16

 

And then in September it was broken up into the issues #39-44 of the comic.

 

So its:

Paper back (May 1980)

quickly followed by Super Special (Spring 80)

both of which coincided with the movies release...

then issues 39-44 starting in September '80 (so #39 probably hit the stands in Jun/July
