Pre hero Marvel and Atlas Registry Points Too Low

76 posts in this topic

Fellow collectors, I was informed that the best way to get certain Registry Point Value adjusted was to lobby the Boards. I believe the Registry points do not reflect the current market value for Pre Hero Marvel and Atlas titles. If you agree with me please post.

To make it fun, show off your prized possessions with their point values.

Two more fun examples from the Clink auction last night, though these are not my books.

Strange Tales #93 CGC 8.0. Sold for $485, worth 95 registry points.

And a flaming example of the woeful registry points for higher grade (8.5 and up) pre-hero books: last night's Strange Tales #97 in CGC 9.0. Sold for a fairly shocking $7,200 and worth 600 registry points.

We know that registry points aren't specifically geared to equal dollars, so they don't have to exactly accurately match market prices, but the current proportions make it hard to compare collections from who go after high grade bronze books, compared to those who collect these titles.

If you look at bang for your buck, the Prehero Marvel/Atlas titles get maybe 1/8th of the registry points for much easier to find high-grade (9.6 and 9.8) x-men between 94 and 142. In that stretch, you can get several hundred registry points for under $100. Not to mention that you can go online and put together 90% or more of that run in 9.6+ in one sitting because they are so plentiful. As the examples above show, with the preheros, the opposite is true, you generally have to pay several hundred dollars to get 100 registry points.

Registry points are disgracefully low for the prices being realized now for these books. Overtreet values are so obsolete.

Highest grade for ST 72 worth 260 points!??

Photobucket

JIM 51 highest grade 550 pts.

I will post some more as soon as can scan them.

Here is a list of auction sales over the last couple of years for Strange Tales numbers 1-79. I usually jot them down, but not always. The points are off by a factor of 3.7 for 9.0+, a factor of 4.8 for 8.0-8.5, and a factor of 4.0 for 7.0-7.5.

So a rough average would be a factor of 4. Of course, there are wild variations, especially for scarce issues/grades.

THERE ARE SOME AWESOME BOOKS IN THIS THREAD.

I am totally behind more recognition for PH books. (worship)

By the way is is really terrible if your book is lower grade. Venus = 30, Tales of Suspense =10, I mean come on (shrug)

What's the market value on that Venus book (super cool book, by the way)? I would imagine you're paying upwards of $100 when you can find a copy to get your 30 registry points.

Meanwhile, you have the following post from this thread. So a $500 Strange Tales #93 will net you 95 registry points, while a $30 X-Men purchase gets you 400 points. This is wildly disproportional not only in terms of expense, but in the difficulty of tracking down even 7.0+ pre-hero Marvels.

And the game is underway

First purchase has been completed.

Uncanny X-men CGC 9.6

Xmen14396.jpg

Bought for: $31

Registry points: 400

% towards Goal: 40%

% budget spent: 31%

On Target: 9% ahead of target

Already realized one possible problem will be if I find myself with less than $20 in my budget, which will limit my buying options greatly. I may amend my challenge to the 10:1 ratio, with a target as close to $100 as possible, so if I spend $120, I'll need to amass 1200 points.

I have my eye on 5-6 other auctions that are still in ratio for my target... I'll let you know as they close how they turn out. Most of my targets are in the 9.4/9.6 range as I have found the top grade premium for 9.8s hurts my budget too much, and sub 9.4s start to see the steep point drop-off without the same cost drop-off.

The sheer sport of this is already immeasurably entertaining...

Shocking example of how the Registry point values need adjustment.

An X-Men 143 in 9.6 is no longer significant in rarity or price. I realize the registry values don't necessarily equate to dollar value but it should influence it. And no one can dispute the rarity factor of PreHero Marvels.

I sadly have no CGCed pre-heroes to post, but I am an enthusiastic pre-hero collector. The disparity that has been pointed out here is overwhelming. It's just a matter of time til adjustments are made.

The pre-hero thread in silver is one of the most active in the category. 377 pages and counting, and every week I see a comic that, due to scarcity or condition, I'd never have expected to see.

Pre-hero Marvels are where the action is! Give them their points!

I think about $100 is correct, I mean I didnt buy it for the points and would rather have had a raw higher grade but there are not many out there raw in any grade and if you want this type of book you gotta take what you can get.

Getting more points would be a bonus. :sumo:
