Sandman 1 color variant?

This has bothered me for a number of years but I finally scanned the two issues for comparison.Anybody give me any information on this?If anybody can help me Im sure its someone on these boards. Thanks guys.

I think the answer will be something about one of the colors running low at the printer or something... Seems like this sort of thing comes up every so often?

So with a striking and not subtle color variation like this would it then be considered a variant or a defect?Would it be desirable or just a freak comic you would see at a sideshow?

CGC considers it a color variant. They have 3 copies graded with the colour variation.

So a little extra red crept into the background plate. Poor quality control makes it a variant?
