If only to tell him he was the greatest artistic influence in my life............

893blahblah.gif Bad call mate, seriously bad call.

What you do is knock hard on the door, and yell:

"I know you're in there Ditko, now get out here and pay me your share of the tab"

Just got home, but I gotta run out and fetch the pictures. It's only pictures of his door. I did speak to him for about 10 minutes before he closed the door on my face. blush.gif

Picture after HighGrade got the door slammed in his face:

Ok here's the scoop. Once he opened the door, I asked him if he was Steve Ditko, and he answered "Yes... Oh, I thought you were the mailman." I then shook his hand and told him that I was a big fan of his and that it was a honor to meet him.

He thanked me politely, at which time I told him that he was a legend for creating Spider-man. He said "I co-created Spider-man, and that's in the past now." He then when on to say that I should forget about the past and support todays creators. I told him that his contribution to Spider-man even though in the "Past" was very important. He said "so what, that was a long time ago." "What was it... forty or fifty years ago." "You can't live in the past." "Look at Stan Lee he's not even into comics anymore." He's somewhere in Hollywood."

He also said "Besides, today's Spider-man is nothing like the version I co-created.

I then asked him if he was still working in the comic book field, in which he replied "I have this office, right." I am still working."

At that point the concierge came up and asked him if everything was alright. He told him not to worry, that everything was fine.

I then told him that my 2 1/2 year old was already a big Spidey fan. He said "good for him." "You have to keep it in the generation." I asked him if he minded talking a little while longer, and he said "Talk about what?" I said about anything.

He said "well, we can just talk about anything, you have to have a specific topic." blush.gif

He then said " I am busy I have to go." And proceeded to close the door.

I didn't even dare ask him for a picture or autograph. I was just happy to have met him.

About 2 hours later, I called him up by phone and told him that I was the guy that stopped by his office earlier. I then asked him if I could commission a sketch. He told he doesn't do sketches or signs autographs. He said if he did it for me, he would have to do it for everyone.

Sounds like he's really tired of fans talking to him about Spider-man. I didn't know who he was before this thread. What's the big deal? How would you like it if you were him and fans were trying to talk to you everyday? It would get annoying after awhile. And he's right... Spider-man has evolved a lot since he co-created it.

That's pretty freaky that you called him on the phone too... if I were you I would not make contact with him again... he might get the police after you. 893whatthe.gif
