How many spine ticks before it drops below 9.0???

I have a 9.0 with 9 small ticks and an 8.5 with 6 large ticks, so to answer your question...I have no idea.

I'd say it depends on whether they break color or not.

That's kind of a loaded question.I think grading is mostly an instinct,or a feeling on how well it presents on the initial inspection of a book.Not a concrete list of imperfections at each level of grade.I really wish there a was definitive list for each grade,but no.
