Set Sale List – Vintage Comic Book & Strip Art!

1 post in this topic

Howdy!

It’s been a tougher year than most with my health issues and I now need to raise money to pay my property taxes before Christmas as the town's going to have an accelerated tax sale on the 27th and I don't want to end up dealing with that.

I have pulled more nice originals I didn’t want to sell out of my personal collection along with two repeat items which I’ve lowered the prices on. I need to receive payment within the week so I can pay those taxes and some bills so time is of the essence.

All are first come, first served.

Postage & Insurance are extra. I can also ship FedEx if you have an account with them.

For payment, I prefer payment by Check or Money Order. If you want to pay the fees, I will also accept PayPal. Overseas customers can pay via bank transfer or PayPal.

Email me at lawrenceshell @ comcast.net to reserve an original or if you have any questions about any of them. I am in and out during the day but will answer all emails in the order received.

And don’t assume a piece is sold if it’s a day or two later, it never hurts to ask!

=====================================

PLEASE NOTE – The larger pieces of artwork were scanned in two sections and stitched together so you may see a double line running through the scan which does not appear on the originals.

Percy Crosby (of SKIPPY fame) Pen & Ink Illustration

This is a great Percy Crosby pen & ink illustration featuring a man surrounded by a bunch of ragamuffin kids not unlike the ones featured in Crosby’s classic SKIPPY newspaper strip. It’s a beauty!

No idea where it was published, perhaps the original edition of LIFE magazine which published many illios by Crosby in its day.

The original is pen & ink and measures 18-1/2 x 14-1/2" and the top left corner is separated from the board but I have the complete piece so it could be restored but I would likely just reattach the broken piece with archival linen tape on the back/. There's also a small piece missing bottom left margin and a very tiny piece missing from the bottom right corner, all this can be hidden with a mat. The board is light tan which is normal for originals of this vintage.

Billy DeBeck BARNEY GOOGLE Daily Strip – 1933

Dated July 17, 1933, this is an excellent example of the BARNEY GOOGLE daily newspaper strip and is a special single panel format! Barney is inundated with fan mail regarding the upcoming wrestling match between Sully and The Viper! In this strip, he reads some of the letters aloud to his little friend, Sawbuck and the newspaper audience! Check out the nice blue pencil shading around Barney!

Signed by DeBeck; this original measures 18” x 4-3/4” and is in excellent condition except for a little whiteout on bottom right corner. Strip is slightly off-white which is typical for originals of this vintage.

Created in 1919, BARNEY GOOGLE was one of the most popular comic strips of the last century, but is nearly forgotten today. Barney’s star really took off when he was given a gift of a race horse for saving a man’s life. That horse, Spark Plug became almost as popular as Google himself! Around 1932, Barney became manager of a wrestler named Sully who he had numerous adventures with for a few years until he met a hillbilly fellow name of Snuffy Smith and the strip went in another direction entirely!

Billy DeBeck BARNEY GOOGLE Daily Strip – 1935

Dated December 13, 1935, this is an excellent example of the BARNEY GOOGLE daily newspaper strip. A pair of policemen roll Barney over a barrel to get the water out of him after he was fished out of the Chicago River. A surprised Snuffy Smith enquires as to what happened and Barney tells him he was racing down Michigan Boulevard, when his hat fell off and covered his horse’s eyes. Next thing he knew, he was being pulled from the river! Snuffy is not happy that Barney was racing on HIS horse and next thing we know, Barney’s back in the river! A funny strip!

Signed by DeBeck in the last panel; this original measures 17-1/2” x 4-3/4” and is in excellent condition. Strip is slightly off-white which is typical for originals of this vintage.

Walt Kelly POGO POSSUM #11, Page 20 (Dell Comics)

Original comic book page by Walt Kelly which was published in POGO POSSUM #11 (Dell, 1953).. This page is from the story “Dog Daze” and features Pogo, Albert, Bunny Rabbit and the Dog character.

Page is inscribed but it’s hard to make out “Best to XXX from Walt”. Page measures 10-3/4” x 13-3/4” and is in Very Good condition except for some mild water stains in the bottom two panels which could be bleached out if you know how.

Walt Kelly. (August 25, 1913 – October 18, 1973) was best known for the comic strip, POGO. He began his animation career in 1936 at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to “Pinocchio” and “Fantasia”. Frank Miller BARNEY BAXTER Daily Strip – 9/23/42

Dated September 23, 1942 – this is an excellent example of the Barney Baxter newspaper strip by the other Frank Miller. In the first panel, Bombers from scattered bases throughout Great Britain take to the air in the war’s mightiest coordinated raid! Barney and his pal, Gopher Gus watch this spectacle from the ground. Barney wishes the rest of his squadron was there to see this and hopes they’re still alive. Gus tries to reassure him they’re probably holed up safe somewhere. A great example of this classic strip!

Signed by Frank Miller in the last panel. Original measures 21” x 5-1/2” and is in Very Good condition.

Frank Miller, the comic strip artist, was born in 1898, and created Barney Baxter in 1935 while working on staff at Denver's Rocky Mountain News. At first the hero was a boy just entering his teens, who had a burning interest in airplanes; but the series took a more adventurous turn when a grown-up aviator named Cyclone Smith took him (with Mom's permission) on a trip to Alaska. By the time Barney got home, he was a seasoned flyer. In 1943, Miller moved to New York City to work at William Randolph Hearst's New York Mirror; and starting in December, 1936, the strip was distributed by King Features Syndicate. Miller passed away in 1949, and the strip folded when the last of his completed strips were run in 1950.

Zack Mosley SMILIN’ JACK – Lot of 23 Daily Strips from 1941

Great batch of twenty-three (23) SMILIN’ JACK daily strip originals by Zack Mosley who was at the top of his game, artistically and story-wise at this stage. Zack’s assistant during this period was Boody Rogers and I wouldn’t be surprised if he worked on these strips as they certainly look like he may have!

All the strips are from 1941 and the same storyline. Dates are 10-21 through 10-25, 10-27 through 11-1, 11-3 through 11-5, 11-7, 11-8, 11-11 through 11-13, 11-15, 11-18, 11-19, and 11-22.

Zack and the lovely “de-icer” Cindy, take off in his plane in search of his missing brother who is also her boyfriend! Cindy causes them to emergency land in a narrow valley with some damage to the plane. They live off the land and Jack tries to make Cindy hate her as she has a crush on him. Finally Jack is able to repair the plane and makes an impossible take off and they head for home where his missing brother has returned and both he and Cindy’s mother are ready to beat Jack up as a rumor has gone out that they eloped which was not true. Jack knocks out his brother and prepares to take on Cindy’s Mom!!! A great sequence of strips and it’d take a few pages to do the story in them justice. Look at the scans which are all readable and enjoy!

Each strip measures 22-1/2” x 7” and is in Very Good condition but there is Brown Staining on all of them in all the areas that had zipatone. All that should be viewable in the scans.

Zack Mosley (December 12, 1906 - December 21, 1993 ) was a comic strip artist best known for the aviation adventures in his long-running “The Adventures of Smilin' Jack” which ran in more than 300 newspapers from 1933 to 1973.

Bob Powell MR. MYSTIC, Page 1 from early Spirit section

Page 1 from an early MR. MYSTIC story drawn by Bob Powell. This was one of the three heroes featured in the weekly SPIRIT section. Mr. Mystic and his associate, Chowderhead, are in Egypt and are about to leave for home. Mystic is concerned because a couple of men have attempted to kill him. He sends Chowderhead off to prepare for their departure and goes to the town square in hopes of finding some information. Suddenly, a beggar bumps into him, taking his amulet, and knocking him down! As he gets his bearings, Mr. Mystic sees some familiar, and sinister, faces further down the square.

Although created by Will Eisner, the character of Mr. Mystic was written and drawn by Bob Powell, who also assisted Eisner in backgrounds for The Spirit main feature in the early days. Powell started doing it in 1940 and continued the feature until he joined the Air Force in 1943.

While Will Eisner stored all the art to his own SPIRIT stories, at least the post-war ones, little care was taken for the other features in the weekly comic section. Only a few pages exist from Mr. Mystic and Lady Luck, the other regular characters. I acquired this page in the 70s and it has resided in my collection ever since. While I have seen several pages by Fred Guardineer, the artist who followed Powell on Mr. Mystic, I have never seen another Mystic original by Powell in over 40+ years of collecting with Powell art being one of my specialties. I hate to call this page rare but, well it is!

Original is Golden Age size and measures a large 14-1/4” x 22-12.” It is in Very Good condition. There are some colorist notes on the art in blue pencil which you should be able to see on the scan. The paper has turned a light tan which is typical of originals of this vintage. There is also some white-out used which is typical of a lot of Powell pages. The scan came out a bit darker than the actual page is.

Please note there may be a little blurriness where the page was stitched together on the scanner.

Bob Powell RED HAWK Complete 7-Page Story

Complete 7-page RED HAWK story entitled “Three Roads To Doom,” drawn by Bob Powell which appeared in one of the western comics published by Magazine Enterprises, in the 1950s.

Red Hawk is alone in his Cheyenne village when Crow raiders come riding in, stealing their finest furs and best ponies! None of Red Hawk’s tribe are there as they are all out hunting or trapping, he was only in camp to get fresh horses but now they are gone. Red Hawk takes off by himself after the Crow raiders and one warrior falls back from the rest to confront him, but Red Hawk manages to knock him off his horse and continues on! The trail turns into three roads and he must decide which one to take. It turns out his choice leads him to a gang of Apache raiders who come after Red Hawk, for his scalp! Red Hawk takes off, escaping his pursuers by jumping off a precipice into the river! He returns to the three roads and this time takes the middle one which almost has him fall into a giant trap pit aka hole in the ground which he barely escapes! Red Hawk recovers the hole and takes off to follow the third road where he comes face-to-face with twenty Crow raiders who come after him and in the chase, encounter the Apache raiders who attack them, giving Red Hawk the means to get away. Three of the Crow raiders leave the battle to get Red Hawk and retrieve their stolen goods but our hero leads them to the covered hole and manages to get them all to fall into it after which he takes the stolen ponies and furs back to his village. Don’t you just love a happy ending? ;)

Signed “Powell” on the first page. All seven originals measure a large 15” x 22” and are in Very Good condition for their age with minimal tanning, the pages are very light colored. The logo is a Photostat and there is a little bit of whiteout which is typical of most of Powell’s art.

Lot of 2-Pgs -- Bob Powell ROCKY LANE – Fawcett, 1953

Lot of two (2) consecutive pages from the ROCKY LANE story entitled “Vigilante Hideout” which was published in FAWCETT’S MOTION PICTURE COMCS # 104 (Fawcett, 1951).

Rocky and his pal, Nugget, are having dinner and speculating who might be the one stealing the latter’s cows. Nugget mentions some Wagoners passing through town just as Muley enters and takes offense, thinking they’re talking about him! He tries to bullwhip Nugget but Rocky pulls out his gun and blasts that whip in half! Muley isn’t happy about that and uses the handle of the whip as a blackjack to the back to Rocky’s head, prompting a knock-down, drag-out fight which Rocky wins! As he walks away, Muley draws his gun to shoot him in the back but someone named Jim intervenes. Next we find Rocky and Nugget at the Express office waiting for nightfall so they can find out who’s been stealing the cattle.

An excellent example of Powell’s western comic book art. I haven’t seen much of his western art at all and this particular original has graced my personal collection for 25+ years. I hate to let it go but my finances need to be taken care of!

Both originals measure a large 15” x 22” and are in Very Good condition for their age with minimal tanning. There is some white-out and a little blue wash coloring on a few panels on each page which was likely used to point out where to add zipatone later on.
