Ghost Rider #1... back cover crease,soil.. and how it affects overall grade.

12 posts in this topic

Hello...I will still love this comic either way.. but wanted to ask you...

How much does a Back cover crease, and overall spotting affect the grade on this comic?

Cover has no real flaws.. a very minor spine roll.. but to call it a roll is really not correct.

The Back cover is where the problems lie, ULC has a nice crease, and some type of soil or, spotting that affects back cover only.

Given the back cover's flaws.. Do all of you feel this would still grade out at around 7.5/ 8.0?....

and if the back cover was clean, w/no crease.. what grade then?....9.0?

For my future buying reference..I am just curious to see how all of you feel about how a Back cover's flaws affect a comic's overall grade..

While I do appreciate a clean back cover.. if given a choice.. I would much rather have a clean front cover anyday...

Anyhow.. here are a few photo's.. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Regardless of what the grade is, it's a fantastic looking book.

I do think the spine roll would count against it a bit.

If the stains are just surface grime, it would count less than if it was something that has soaked through the paper.

The corner crease is a bit long, but not as bad as if it was on the front.

It could be pressed, but I don't think it would be worth the expense.

I think it's in the 6.5 range depending on the stains.

That's just my opinion, as this is a tough one to call.

It looks great! A definate keeper!

(It would look even better if it was among the books in *my* collection.)

Z, Nice copy thumbsup2.gif - I agree with your thoughts. It looks like a 9.0 or better FC, and a 6.0 BC - so what do you do? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Send it in, of course - particulary if overhang is not an issue.

Thnx guys.. I would love a true HG example of this comic.. but I am more then happy to settle for this one.

I look, and see what even 9.2 CGC slabbed #1's go for..($330 yesterday on Ebay)

And another GR #1 where the reserve was not met , at $175 from a seller with no feedback.. and small scans.

So even tho I feel I overpaid for this one at $75.. I am still thrilled with it.. and when viewed in its Mylar prison with Full Back it looks Flat, and Fantastic.... I really wont even look at the Back much anyways.

I seem to be set in my ways now.. I woud rather buy all my comics in solid..

F+/ VF+ and have more cash to buy more comics.. then spend 5 x on 1 comic, and have it sit all alone in my box.

Perhaps I will regret not buying more HG in the future, but right now.. I gotta scratch that itch.. and HG CGC just aint in my horizen, or Tax bracket.

Seriously though, I do need a "reader" of #1.

That's about as fantastic of a reader as you could possibly find. *drool*

For the record. No way would I slab that book.

You wouldn't be happy with the grade, so why not keep it in a Mylar and let it masquerade as a NM book.

Out of curiosity, Z.

Do the back cover stains soak through the cover?

(Can you see them on the inside of the back cover?)

A few do.. but as a whole ..no.. and those that do.. it is faint

They are not grease.. nor soil.. it looks to be rust?.. with no water damage along with it.

I actually have no other comics that have this type of soil

I am stumped.
