Best of 2012 up on CAF

80 posts in this topic

Hey all,

I know the Comicart-l has a nice thread going on about this, so I figured I'd start one here and see what the other board members are putting up.

I feel kind of silly putting my stuff up as "best of 2012" compared to the Kirbys and DKR's and Killing Jokes and Watchmen of the world, but I figure it's all for fun so why not?

so, here's my list for the year (I just did a count, and I got 59 pages / pieces in 2012, I need a break!):

Art Adams - Fantastic Four 348 Title Splash:

http://cafurl.com?i=19179

Art Adams - Marvel Universe Series 2 Trading Cards - #149 New Fantastic Four:

http://cafurl.com?i=18255

Art Adams (is there a theme here) - 347 pg 27 (I think this is the 1st page with the whole team together)

http://cafurl.com?i=19299

And, believe it or not, I even put up 2 non AA pages..

Uncanny X-Force 18 pg 16 - This is the climax to the Dark Angel Saga, one of my favorites in my collection

http://cafurl.com?i=18020

Wolverine and the X-Men 4 Pg 13 - This year was Nick Bradshaw's coming out party, a little Art Adams, a little P. Craig Russel. I love how he can jam so much detail onto the page, and yet the main focus of each panel stays intact.

Nice stuff.

Btw, I think its great that you're putting them up against the kirbys and whatnot. To me it should be about sharing and getting to see other collectors' cool stuff whether its worth 100 bucks or 100 grand

Most of my collection consists of commissions, but this year, I branched out. :)

I picked up a few published pages - Matthew Clark DP, Swan LSH, Zahler BC of LnC:W2E, Hdr (pencils) and Wiacek (inks) on a 2010 LSH story.

I got a con sketch which seldom happens - I go to few cons and I get stupid when I'm there. :) This year though I got Grogg! by Art Adams, two mini-paintings by Katie Cook, and a really cool deal with Joe Eisma of Morning Glories (read it). Joe was signing at my LCS and agreed to do a head shot before each chapter of the Deluxe Morning Glories HC book. It's very cool.

Anyway, my nominees are:

  • Published Covers
    • Aaron Lopresti's Amethyst 1 Rejected Cover. I saw this at Aaron's table at the Rose City Comic Con and it haunted me for some time. Luckily for me, Kathy bought it for my birthday! I think it's lovely and as you can read in the description, it is really the OA for issue 1. :)

    • Thom Zahler's LnC:W2E - Bk Cover of TPB. If you aren't reading Love and Capes, do yourself a favor and start. This piece is a very rare piece of published (okay, soon to be published) LnC OA. Thom usually works on tracing paper for breakdowns which he then scans and turns into art on his computer. This piece is one of the few that is OA. Plus, how often do you see a superhero patting his wife's baby bump? :)

    [*]Published Interior Panel pages

    • Curt Swan's Legion(1983) 306 page 17. This is a big deal for me. It's as close to a page from his LSH run in Adventure as I'm likely to get. Larry Mahlstedt inked it in a "George Klein-like" manner to give it the right feel and I really like Curt's page layout - using rounded rectangles to indicate it's a flash back.

    [*]Unpublished Other

    • Russ Heath's Sea Devils #6. If you haven't looked at this piece you are missing a treat. Rush is 84 years old and the man still has it. I wanted a high end piece from him and Kathy surprised me with this beauty. She went with color and it's outstanding.

    • Russ Heath's Showcase 29 - Sea Devils. Another Heath recreation - Kathy and I got our signals mixed up and I got two Heath recreations, but that's not exactly a problem. I like the gray wash, but it does look weak next to the colored one. :)

If you want to see everything I got this year, click here. It's the by date list. The 2012 items stop with the Astounding Wolfman sketch card from the Hero Initiative.

Here are my entries and runner-ups.

Daredevil #47 - Colan/Klein

I read Daredevil #47 "Brother, Take My Hand!" for the first time in Son of Origins when I was about 7 years old. It is one of my favorite stories, thrilled to own the cover.

http://cafurl.com?i=19265

Flash Gordon (watercolour) - Al Williamson

I have wanted an inked Flash Gordon for a while now but getting one of his watercolour Flash Gordon is a dream come true.

http://cafurl.com?i=19266

Comics Interview Cover #56 - Alan Davis

I remembered this cover very vividly when I picked it up at my LCS. One of my favorite Excalibur pieces by Alan Davis.

http://cafurl.com?i=19267

Johnny Comet 2/27/52 strip - Frank Frazetta

I have been a fan of Frazetta's work for years from his EC work, to Vampirella #1 to Tarzan and John Cater covers. This hits all the right notes, car, girl and oh ya my birthday. I am thrilled to finally own something by the master.

http://cafurl.com?i=19268

Warlord of Mars #16 - Joe Jusko

Reminds me more of some paperback covers. For me this conveys the whole John Cater/Dejah Thoris story.

http://cafurl.com?i=19269

Runner Ups:

Red Sonja #15 cover (unpublished) - Dave Cockrum

Full pencil cover by a great artist. This one was in the running for best of for the longest time competing with Buscema Silver Surfer splash and Jusko Warlord cover.

http://cafurl.com?i=18548

Judgement Day Silver Surfer GN page 42 - John Buscema

Another piece that almost made it into the Best of. John for me is THE SIlver Surfer artist and I finally got a full figure all by JB.

http://cafurl.com?i=19261

Shadow Illustration - Mike Kaluta

Been a fan of Mike Kaluta's Shadow since I was young. Great composition!

http://cafurl.com?i=18854

Doctor Who and The Deal - Dave Gibons

Tom Baker is my favorite Doctor and I remember reading these when they were reprinted in the US.

http://cafurl.com?i=19262

Portfolio Plate - Nestor Redondo

The inking is just spectacular, Nestor at his best.

http://cafurl.com?i=18627

Rocketeer: Cliff, Betty and Peevy

Love his composition and use of ink and ink wash.

2012 was a vintage year for acquisitions, so narrowing the group down to just five was not easy - left on the sidelines were three awesome 1960s Kirby twice-up super-hero battle pages, two early 1980s Uncanny X-Men covers, two Byrne X-Men pages, X-Men pages by Paul Smith, Bob Brown and Jim Lee. a Buscema Conan cover, a Herriman Krazy Kat Sunday, a spectacular James Jean Fables cover, a Romita Sr. Red Sonja cover, etc.

In the end, I selected these 5 for your consideration:

1. Barry Windsor-Smith - Conan the Barbarian #13 Cover (1972)

My biggest pick-up of the year - finally got my BWS Conan cover!

2. Alex Schomburg - Green Hornet Comics #19 Cover (1944)

Probably my best and favorite pick-up of the year - a vintage Schomburg WWII cover! This and my Vault of Horror cover seem to impress visitors the most out of all the comic art pieces in my collection.

3. Frank Thorne - Marvel Feature v. 2 (Red Sonja) #6 Cover (1976)

What can I say - rare as hen's teeth! I've never seen another Thorne Sonja cover surface to date. Was at/near the top of my want list for ages and was thrilled to finally check it off.

4. Dave Cockrum - Uncanny X-Men #100, p. 1 splash (1976)

A spectacular Cockrum X-Men splash and the most commented on piece in my collection so I guess people seem to like it. ;)

5. George Herriman - Krazy Kat Sunday (June 18, 1918)

Krazy helps Ignatz through an existential crisis and gets conked in the head by a brick not once, but twice, for his efforts! Sheer Herriman genius; so happy that my year-long quest for the right KK Sunday finally bore fruit late in the year.

Enjoy!

I have a request. When posting the links to your nominated pieces, please use your gallery link and not your Lowry link so I can leave comments that are "permanent."

Yeah, I know it's all about me, but it is easier that way. :)

Here are my (non)contenders:

Unpublished: Other Rudy Nebres, who lives 10 minutes from me, did this Doc vs Drac with The Scarlet Witch in the balance

rudy nebres

Published Covers - I have two entries that pale in comparison to the beauty of that Conan cover but are loved and treasured here in NJ all the same

Starman 3 cover painting Tony Harris

starman 3

and Strange Tales 11 by Kevin Nowlan from layouts by Carl Potts

sorry alex this one is lowry only so far

published: pinups, blah blah - even though it was never published it was drawn to be so! Tony Harris Jack Knight trading card art

so happy to have this - off white give me your companion piece!

and lastly,

Published: panel page Gene Colan and Tom Palmer on Tomb of Dracula 44 page

check out the Eye of Agamotto in that first panel!

I had many contenders. Up until late December my Chris Stevens oil painting of Asgardian Storm was in the show. So was Tom Raney with Silver Surfer vs Thor ala the SS#4 cover by Big John Buscema. Man that is a beautiful piece. But those covers and pinup and ToD page, man that stuff just can't be beat for me. See it here, but consider it in the vault.

Unless you want to trade a Foster. Or some Crumb. Maybe Alex Raymond. Hmmm. doh!

But until then... :whee:
