Best of 2012 up on CAF

Although I had to sell a few pieces to finance this insane addiction, it's been a good year for me.

You can find the pages I got here :

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetailSearch.asp?Yr=2012&GCat=33158

Strangely, I've bought three "kiss pieces". Extremely similar in an obvious way and yet highly different : Dell'Otto, Dillon, Quesada certainly all have a very distinct style.

The highlight of the year for me was getting THE page I had wanted/needed more than any page. It was a crazy acquisition as its owner seemed to love it as much as I did ! But I haven't regretted it for 1 second : title splash of "Until The End Of The World". I have wanted pages because of nostalgia, linked to old feelings from years ago, but I had never wanted a page for current feelings, with an actual meaning in my every day life.

Although I did not include it in my Lowry's top 5, the aquisition that I consider my biggest stroke of luck EVER is this panel page featuring the first appearance of the Winter Soldier. I had heard theories about Heritage upping the bids, but I can testify of their integrity : my secret bid was 20 times higher than the price I got it for ! This page meant a lot to me (a case of anticipated nostalgia) and I was willing to go crazy... When I won, I first thought I was the only one interested in this page (very rare and incredibly lucky event), but it seems it was just "basic luck" as this page has become the one for which I receive the most enquiries ;-)

Congrats to All of you who have succeeded in getting the pages you wanted last year, it's quite an achievement to keep pursuing this hobby right now ! And for all those who couldn't last year, I wish you the best (acquisitions) for 2013. Sadly, it's my turn to take a break...

I have entered the Lowry ‘Best of’ for quite a few years – always a fun excuse to look back on the year in art collecting and see some great pieces I missed through the year. Also makes me want to thin the herd a bit to recoup some cash – this hobby is getting pricey!

Selecting the 5 pieces wasn't too hard this year...although if I had to pick a 6th it would be the Byrne/Sinnott M2in1 #50 page posted recently.

I like to tune my Lowry to ensure it represents my interests as I am always after more art so if you are considering parting with any art like this please let me know.

Of course, thanks to Bill and Brian!

1. Kirby/Everett Chamber of Darkness 5 (1970) Cover

I love penciller / inker combinations where both creators are personal favorites. There are only a handful of Kirby / Everett covers so I am quite happy to have this one under my careful watch - the story depicted was actually written by Kirby as well.

Cover reviewed in this blog: http://outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed.com/axk4uqj

2. Mike Miller Game of Thrones 5 Cover

I really like Game of Thrones, so was great to pick up several covers from the comic adaption from Mr. Miller. Was tough to pick a favorite but this one has so much of the cast that I went with it; if you like this one head to my CAF gallery to see #1, 4 and 6...#6 has the most views as of this posting.

3. Bissette Totleben - Swamp Thing Origin Splash

Bissette - Totleben's first Swamp Thing splash...with origin retold. I have been after Bissette - Totleben for a while now so thrilled to add this 'historic' page to the collection. I was lucky that this got less attention from potential buyers who focus on Moore-written and I get it, one of my galleries is called Moore written, but the art is the art!

Following is short note from John Totleben who was kind enough to respond to my email re: this page:

This is the very first "official" page of ST that Bissette and I did and as far as I know it's completely legit. It's a pretty nice splash page (w/the obligatory origin recap), especially for two greenies coming right out of the gate!

4. Kirby / Smith - Captain America Bicentennial Treasury p7 BWS Panel Page

Kirby and Smith - very different artists but I enjoy both so this collaboration is a special and scarce one. I picked up my other page from this book in 2006 and over the years it has really grown on me so when I saw this one pop up I went after it -- helped that I had a quiet SDCC. Took a while to secure the art but happy to have it - Thanks Harry! The other page from this story in my CAF gallery is much quieter versus the action in this one - gotta love Cap putting the hurt on Hitler. For those that don't know, this is the only book Jack Kirby and Barry Smith worked on together - and only the 1st chapter (11 pages); a few others are on CAF so check them out if you like these

5. Everett - TTA 94 p9 Dorma and Sub-Mariner Panel Page

I saw this page 5 - 10 years ago in San Diego at the Donneley exhibit, happy to finally add it to the Everett gallery although I should have just bought it back then! Dorma or Subby in every panel and lush Everett inks on this large art.

Hart, thanks for stitching the scans!

After a bit of prodding I managed to put up a couple of my acquisitions from the last year into the mix

For your consideration in the interior panel page category -

Brian Bolland Killing Joke pg - http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=972524&GSub=18115

Unpublished Commission:

Arthur Adams Redux of X-Men 175 - which quickly became the most commented upon piece in my gallery and certainly sets a high bar for any future commissions I get.

Convention sketch:

Jim Cheung's Judge Anderson

Look forward to seeing the rest of the entries this week, there's always some gems I overlooked. Good luck to all.

6) YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN AND flagged as a comicart-L member before

7) Click that and you will have a pop-up window with 3 pulldown menus

Why didn't you vote for the newspaper strips?

Don't have a big interest in those and didn't see any that really stuck out to me. If I did vote, I probably would have put them all on AXA

Since I haven't voted in that category yet, I guess I still have time to go back and pick three. hm

It is funny. I get a few votes every year but I do not expect to get very many votes this year. The thing is, I really think my pieces are among the best I have. If I just wanted votes I wouldn't have posted in the covers part (2 of mine even) but I love that art!

That's what it's all about.

You bought the pieces because you love them, not so that someone else would. :applause:

True Dat! In fact, if everyone loved them I wouldn't have had opportunity to buy them at all. But I do like to get votes, I must admit. Maybe I need more boobies in my art!

Boobies do help get votes and views from the evidence that I've seen. :)

That Cover category is really tough.

That said, I too like to get the positive feedback on my pieces. I know that I'm not going to win no matter how much I like what I've bought, but it's fun to put it out there.

Heck, just picking 5 pieces from what I bought this year was tough. Picking 3 in each category is really hard.

I will post this on the comic art-l list after the voting is over with but though I would ask here. Do anyone think we should any any categories to the best of for 2013?

I had one request for illustrations, that could be expanded to non-comic art category. For example, I collect rock poster art, but could include art for movie posters, animation art etc. I know Bill wants the site to be about original comic art but it has expanded to more since many collect oa outside of comic art.

Let me here your thoughts.

I think cleaning up commissions would be good.

Maybe do Sketch Covers and Commissions (Take home or con doesn't matter). I feel like these are 2 very different things that have 2 very different fan bases.

I also do think it would be cool to have Illustration art (Published) as a category, to include stuff like CCG / DnD / RPG art / Book Covers / Ect. But that is a bit lateral from comic art.
