Best of 2012 up on CAF

80 posts in this topic

We separated con drawings from commissions since less time is put into them. There is less than 5% of the other is sketch cover, I don't think that is enough to create a difference category. I agree other is the biggest and should be broken down just not sure what is the best.

Then I think it's the naming that's confusing (maybe just me? (shrug) )

If you go through con sketches, I am fairly certain there are a few that were take homes. Because I'd look at con sketch vs other, and if I had a take home, I'd say it's closer to con-sketch than an "other"

I haven't seen as many "I voted" messages as in the past, so here's hoping this will remind you of the fun!

Once again, thanks to Bill and Brian for puling this together. As in the past, I found a number of pieces that I somehow missed in my (seems like) hourly reviews of CAF postings. My choices are based on pieces that I would jump to buy myself, or that I just really think are special and I’m glad the owner was generous enough to share with the rest of us. That said, I found myself changing and rethinking my choices over and over again. But, finally my votes are as follows:

Published Covers

One of the toughest years in recent memory. There were some amazing pick -ups. But, I only get three votes, and they went to:

Fantastic Four #200 (Michael Finn)

Green Hornet #19 (Gene Park)

Daredevil #47 (Brian Peck)

If I had more votes, Adventures of Superman #498 (J Sly), Captain Marvel #31 (Weng Keong Tam), the two Cardy covers; Brave and the Bold #101 (Guenter Jandrasits) and Superman #281 (Ronan Killack),and Wolverine #20 (Alex B). See what I mean? Too many good choices!!

Published Splash pages, pinups

Tales of Suspense #79 (Ronan Killack)

Uncanny X-Men #100 (Gene Park)

Adventure #437 (Steve Morger)

Very honorable mentions go to JLA #12, page 1 (Raymond Bryan), Buscema Black Widow splash (Drake Tungsten), Daredevil #93, pages 26/26 (A Arntfield) and Superman Red Son (Malvin V).

Published Interior Panel pages

This was, in my humble opinion, the strongest category this year.

Amazing Spider-Man #37, page 15 (Ronan Killack)

Gaze into the fist of Dredd (Chris Caira)

Killing Joke, page 42 (Joseph Melchior)

This was a crazy year. How does a Killing Joke page end up in my honorable mention? When there are two! Killing Joke, page 24 (Ronan Killack), Ditko Spider-man (Comicart B) – yep, two of those too!, and let’s not forget Cap #100, page 20 (Hans Kosenkranius), Tales to Astonish #94, p9 (Mark Levy), Iron Man #120, p2 (R Shur Gin), Watchmen #5, page 18 (J Sly), and Kubert Star Spangled War Stories #158 (Rob Stolzer). I could go on and on. What an amazing assortment of wonderful art!

Published Strip Art

I’ve really started appreciating this category more in recent years, and this year exceeded expectations. My votes:

Krazy Kat (Gene Park),

Terry and the Pirates (Roger K)

Gasoline Alley (Comicart B)

Honorable mentions; Johnny Comet (Brian Peck), Kamandi (Felix Lu), and Gasoline Alley (Jeff Singh).

Unpublished Convention Sketches

Valkyrie by Ryan Sook (Hart Reikhof)

Wrightson Swamp Thing (Ray Cuthbert)

Hawkman and Hawkgirl by Dave Wachter (Michael Dunne)

I also liked the Valkyrie by Esad Ribic (Erik Sveinson) and Power Girl by Frank Cho (Wallace Harrington).

Unpublished other

This is always the hardest category for me. There are so many amazing pieces (the most of any category), from such a broad range of tastes. Ah, well. That said, the ones that struck a chord with me are :

Sea Devils #6 by Russ Heath (Alex Johnson) – Just love this piece!

The Dark Knight Returns (Felix Lu)

Simonson Beta Ray Bill and Thor (John Cogan)

Others that I think are really worth a special mention include; The Spirit by Colin Wilson (Thorsten Brummel), Art Adams Reduxx of X-Men #175 (Joseph Melchior), Bolland Atom One Minute Later (Michael Finn), and Williamson Flash Gordon (Brian Peck).

Once again, thanks to all for “putting it out there”, and I hope 2013 is (if possible and, after seeing all of these, it would be difficult) a better year for you for collecting.

Published Covers

1 - NotSoNice Collection, The - Hopeless, Maine - Personal Demons Cover

I know nothing about this book or the artists, but I love this cover. I'll be buying some comics or trades shortly and isn't that what covers are supposed to make you do?

2 - Davich, Steven - Free Comic Day Cover for Stuff of Legends by Charles P Wilson III

CPW3 is a wonderful artist and this covers grabs me, the nice scene of childhood toys with the image slashed by the claws of the bad guy. Wonderful. Another one that would make me buy the books if I didn't already have them.

3 - Bryan, Raymond - Batgirl #13 Cover

This was a terrible choice for me because there was so much wonderful competition, but this is the one I chose because of the wonderful rendering and the story telling. Hope she makes it.

Honorable Mention - The ones that I didn't give votes, but probably should have. :)

  • Wallace Harrington's Lowry :: Alex Ross Superman & Power Girl Wizard Cover - Uh, it's Alex Ross' Superman and Power Girl on a cover, of course, it's great.
  • The NotSoNice Collection's Lowry :: ARSENIC LULLABY TPB 02 Cover - I like simple covers and line work that tells a story - Jeff Smith Bone like.
  • Gene Park's Lowry :: Barry Windsor-Smith - Conan the Barbarian #13 Cover (1972) - BWS at his best and I passed it up in the vote!
  • Ron Sonenthal's Lowry :: Strange Tales #181, Cover - Warlock!! - Pretty much anything in Ron's CAF is something I like and this is one of the best Warlock covers by Starlin
  • Ron Sonenthal's Lowry :: Green Lantern #22, Cover - Kane/Anderson - Remember what I just said about Ron's gallery? Here's another example.

Published - Splash pages, Pinups

1 - Alex B's Lowry :: Amazing Spider-Man #545 p21-22 (MJ & Peter final kiss) - Joe Quesada

Love the image and the emotion, not the story.

2 - Steven Morger's Lowry :: Eve from DC Treasury Edition - The Bible

A great page from one of the most beautiful comics ever produced. Kubert and Redondo!

3 - Chris Caira's Lowry :: Batman Earth One DPS by Gary Frank

Classic Batman page. Gary does an excellent job of capturing the young Batman at work.

Honorable Mention

  • Raymond Bryan's Lowry :: Justice League Issue #12 Page 1 - This is excellent work by both Jim and Scott. A classic image of the time period.
  • John Cogan's Lowry :: Bruce Timm Julie Newmar Catwoman in Color - Julie Newmar was Catwoman and she's beautifully captured here.
    mark depolito's Lowry :: Gwen Stacy by Tim Sale - I think Tim captured Gwen, who should have lived to be Peter's wife.
  • Ron Lim's Lowry :: J. Scott Campbell Gwen Stacy pin-up - A beautiful J. Scott Campbell image of Gwen who (see above).
  • Paul N's Lowry :: Fables 116 Page 8 - Mark Buckingham doesn't get half the credit he should for his wonderful work on Fables.
  • Chris Shields's Lowry :: Supergirl 5 - Page 12 - Asrar may be my favorite Supergirl artist since Swan and Mooney. Wonderful work.

Published - Interior Panel Pages

1 - Mike D's Lowry :: Detective Comics #474 page 29 ROGERS AUSTIN END PG w JOKER

My favorite scene from my favorite Batman run - Englehart/Rogers/Austin were the best. Beautiful art and a story to match. If you've never read this run, go do it now!

2 - Mark Levy's Lowry :: Everett - TTA 94 p9 Dorma and Sub-Mariner

Everett's Sub-Mariner is unmatched. Any page from any of those books is beautiful.

3 - Mike D's Lowry :: Swamp Thing #5 page 6 WRIGHTSON ORIGIN PAGE

Wein/Wrightson magic - Swamp Thing's origin in one page by THE artist for the character. Hard to do better; not sure it's possible.

Honorable Mention

  • Joseph Melchior's Lowry :: Killing Joke page 42 by Brian Bolland and Alan Moore Plank pg - Excellent art and a great part of the story
  • Paul N's Lowry :: Fables 116 Pages 02 and 03 AND Paul N's Lowry :: Fables 8 Page 8 - I mentioned the qualify of Buckingham's art above. These two examples are 10 years apart and the quality over that period is amazingly consistent. Quiet introspection as Rose begins to think she may indeed love Bigby in Fables 8 and stress and strain as one of Rose and Bigby's children tries to find another. Excellent work.
  • Jim Warden's Lowry :: Super Powers # 6 Pg. 14 by Jack Kirby - Kirby pencils, a Kirby Superman face unmarred by editors, Darkseid, heroes in tubes, what more do you want?!?!?!

There were way too many more wonderful pages for me to note. Thanks to all for sharing.

Published: Strip Art

1 - Jeff Singh's Lowry :: Gasoline Alley Daily by Frank King

Just lovely - King was extremely talented.

2 - Comicart B's Lowry :: Gasoline Alley Sunday (23 October 1927)

More King. Can you tell I'm a fan?

3 - Hans Kosenkranius 's Lowry :: Patrick McDonnell - 2006 Mutts Sunday Strip

The best strip going today? Mutts, I think.

Unpublished - Con Sketches

1 - Jeff Singh's Lowry :: Dragonlady commission by Bill Sienkiewicz

Really nice take on the Dragonlady. Excellent work by Bill

2 - Stephen Wroth's Lowry :: Etrigan - Agnes Garbowska

Agnes' work makes me smile and this piece is an excellent example.

3 - Andreas G's Lowry :: Supergirl (Cir-El) playing on her 3DS

Mahmud Asrar's work is outstanding and this is a really nice rendition of a lost Supergirl.

Honorable Mention

  • Wallace Harrington's Lowry :: Frank Cho Power Girl Sketch - Excellent humor and rendering. I do miss the boob window as a running joke though.

Unpublished - Other

1 - Gary Land's Lowry :: Garry Leach Batman 73 redo

I love this. Of course, it's based on a wonderful original and that helps, but it is exceptional.

2 - Joseph Melchior's Lowry :: Arthur Adams commission Redux of X-Men 175

Another favorite. Art nailed the cover recreation in his style, but I really love the creepy guy hanging out over it. Nice to work Art's love the weird into the commission.

3 - Steven Davich's Lowry :: Doom Patrol by Richard Sala

I can't quite explain it, but this piece really seems to capture the Doom Patrol. It grabs me.

Honorable Mention

There are so many that I enjoyed. Here are just a few:

  • Filmore W. Bedwick's Lowry :: MJ/Venom - Eric does pretty women as well as anyone. This piece is very clever in the use of venom.
  • John Cogan's Lowry :: Walter Simonson Beta Ray Bill & Thor Commission - Seriously? This is awesome. I'd love to have something like it.
  • Thorsten Brümmel's Lowry :: Colin Wilson - The Spirit - Colin Wilson catches the spirit of Eisner's splashes. Really nice.
  • Chris Caira's Lowry :: Han Solo's Trophy Wall by Nick Runge - Proof that Han shot first!
  • Ron Lim's Lowry :: C.P. Wilson Spidey vs. Electro Pooh-inspired piece - I'm a CPW3 fan and this is a nice example. Makes me smile.
  • Felix Lu's Lowry :: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS (Frank Miller) - Awesome and better than the published one!
  • Michael One Minute Later 's Lowry :: Brian Bolland - The Atom One Minute Later - Michael has a million of these, but few are better.
  • Sean Wasielewski's Lowry :: RUDY NEBRES Dr. Strange vs Dracula, for the life of The Scarlet Witch - Amazing work by Rudy. One of my favorites for the year.

Of course, I think my submittals are wonderful, too, but that's obvious 'cause I bought them. :)

Hello

First, I must admit, I edited Ron’s email to create mine but these are my selections, thanks Ron.

Second, thanks to Bill and Brian...always fun to review the Lowry and see what people decide to honor with their votes.

Third, thanks to the participants, let's face it if we don't post the art, the Lowry wouldn't be very compelling

I agree with the sentiment that the panel page category was toughest but there are more panel pages so makes some sense that it should be tough.

To the votes...

Published Covers:

Kirby Fantastic Four #200 (Michael Finn) – Classic and in nostalgia sweet spot – FF had a great stroyline running to #200 milestone

BWS Conan #13 (Gene Park) – BWS and Conan, done deal!

Starlin Captain Marvel #31 (Weng Keong Tam) – Sweet Starlin cover

Published Splash pages, pinups:

Colan Tales of Suspense #94 (Ron Sonenthal) – very evocative for a superhero piece

Jones As a Child (Steve Morger) – saw this in SDCC – gorgeous Jones, gotta vote for it

Kubert/Redondo Eve (Steve Morger) – another Morger owned...great team...beautiful splash

Published Interior Panel pages

Rogers/Austin Detective 474 (Mike D) – Don’t want to be a hog but damn, this would fit in my collection nicely

Kirby/Everett Thor 170 Karnilla page (Drake Tungsten) – See above but I feel it is in the right place

Bolland Killing Joke, page 42 (Joseph Melchior) – Doesn’t everyone want one?

Published Strip Art

Not so expert here but fun to spin through and vote:

Krazy Kat (Gene Park) – Some of these I don’t always get but this one works well for me

Prince Valiant (Pablo Potillo) - Classic Foster, several outstanding panels

Paddy Payne (Hart Reickof) – Reminds me of summers in the UK, love British fighter planes!

Unpublished Convention Sketches

Bill S. Dragonlady (Jeff Singh) – like the image and colors

Wrightson Swamp Thing (Ray Cuthbert) – nice and vintage

Cho Power Girl (Wallace Harrington) – funny and sexy...the art I mean

Unpublished other

Jay A. Dark Supergirl ( Carlos Simoes) – I have been watching these – need to get one!

Miller The Dark Knight Returns (Felix Lu) – Early bird got a great prize here

Art Adams X-Men #175 redux (Joseph Melchior) – Love the clever recreation format

Looking forward to Lowry 2013!

Another great year! Thanks to all who submitted their favorite art of 2012. As usual, my picks primarily went to pieces I would like to have for my own collection. But there were instances where the art was so spectacular that I had to give it a nod, even if it didn't fit my collecting focus. I also had to add honorable mentions; just too much nice art and on any given day, they could have made it into the top three.

So for now, here are my picks:

Congrats on your DD #47 topping the "Covers" poll, Brian - I knew it was going to be close between that and the FF #200 cover for top honors!

I'm happy that my Herriman Krazy Kat Sunday shared the top position in the "Strip Art' category and that my Cockrum X-Men #100 splash placed second in the "Splash" category. My previous best showing was a single 2nd place finish (don't even remember what piece or category it was) many years ago. I was also glad to see my Frank Thorne Red Sonja cover get some love - I had originally left that entry out of my Lowry in favor of a Kirby panel page, but then decided I had to post it as who knows when another one will ever hit the market! Thanks to Ron and whoever else voted for my Schomburg Green Hornet cover - this was my favorite pick-up of the year, though I knew that it would be tough for a 1940s cover to get a lot of votes.

Actually, thanks to everyone who voted for any of my pieces, and congrats to everyone who participated this year - there was a lot of great art posted and it was fun going through everything as usual. I don't remember everything I voted for, but, IIRC, I voted for Felix's Adrian Tomine "Donger" page, Ron's TOS 94 splash, Chris' Han Solo trophy wall, Joe M.'x Arthur Adams X-Men #175 redux and "Ronan" K.'s Ditko ASM page and Kirby TOS 79 splash among others.

One of my covers got a vote, and not the one I would have thought. But just to get a vote in that category put a smile on my face. But then I did not get one vote for my awesome Colan / Palmer panel page, which if you saw up close you would try to buy. Yes, you would. And I just missed the top 10 in commissions, but that seemed about right to me given that collection of art! I once got 4th in that category I think (my PMS Drs Doom and Strange I think) and am in this to win it some year..

Thanks to everyone who voted for my Daredevil #47, its the most votes and the best of I have in any of the Best of going back to when I was hand counting the votes ( I don't miss that). The rest of my entries were popular with some of you as well, I posted a variety of art from the 50s to the 60s and even something created just recently. Thats what I like about the best of so much variety in people's tastes. Looking forward to next year.

My vote helped push your KK into a first place tie. Otherwise, you would have been in second place...with my KAMANDI piece. Which...is amazing. Did not expect the KAMANDI piece to finish so high, just one vote out of first. As well...expected nothing for the "Donger". Had to include it because it was a favorite from the past year, but very surprised that it got as many votes as it did.

Are previous years' "Best of" entries archived anywhere? I'm certain this is my best showing ever, as well, with a first, a second, and a third. I thought the Frank Miller piece had a decent shot to finish high, but am still really surprised by the others. I generally expect certain entries to get overlooked.

So thanks to everyone for the votes. And congrats to everyone who participated. Especially Brian.

Now, having said all that, how would you guys feel if the "Best Of" was simply an exhibition, with no competitive element? In other words, doing away with the vote? I do enjoy the vote, but I like picking my five favorites from the previous year, and seeing everyone else's top 5, the most. Maybe without the vote, more people would participate. Just a thought.

I wouldn't have a problem with doing away with the vote, as I suspect (sadly), some of the best art gets left out as their owners do not participate out of fear of "devaluing" their pieces (either monetarily and/or psychologically) should they not fare well voting-wise, or just through overexposure. But, I do like the interactivity of the vote, and it's cool to see collectors who are absolutely thrilled when their entries get 1 or a small # of votes. I guess I'd like to keep it the way it is, but wouldn't have a problem with change either.

Okay, I am a little late to this thread, but my was very behind on updating CAF. I swim in the OA kiddie pool, but I thought I would share anyway :)

Infinity War #3 page 26

Thanos, Thanos, Thanos. I have long wanted a Thanos page by Ron Lim and was very happy to see this for sale here by oceans11.

Green Lantern: Rebirth #3 page 5

In Geoff Johns' mini series that brought back Hal Jordan, Kyle Raynor protects himself as Kilowog and the Guardian, Ganthet, battle. Meanwhile, John Stewart takes on the entire Justice League (and is doing well) while Guy Gardner makes his way to the action. (Purchased from malvin on eBay.)

Spectre #15 page 2

Spectre shows his anger with mankind in the Sinai Peninsula, location of many horrific battles. I love this Mandrake page purchased from CatskillComics.

Fables #6 page 18

This page from part 1 of my favorite Fables story, Animal Farm, has Mark Buckingham's first work in Fables. This page also has the last (living) appearance of Colin.

Speed Comics #37 page 8

Punching a Nazi into the open mouth of a waiting crocodile...does it get any better than that? This is my first golden age art.
