My first Stan Lee signature!

13 posts in this topic

Moving closer to completing "Keys to the Kingdom Set".

As some of you already know, I'm trying to complete a set of keys tied into Adam Warlock. This issue, Thor 165, had been floating on eBay for at least a month or so and I had been watching it like a hawk hoping to get my filthy hands on it.

I will admit, I did pay double the FMV for it... and I did my level-best to haggle with the seller to bring down the price, but he wouldn't budge... I guess he figured out I was desperate for it. Cardinal Rule: Don't ever come across as desperate for any item... because once you do, they got you by the b*lls!

Although I'm slightly dissapointed at what I paid for it, I'm delighted to say it is my first CGC comic featuring Stan Lee's autograph. And I'm happy for that since Stan The Man co-created both Thor and Him (later to be named Adam Warlock) with Jack Kirby, so its a fitting signature and not a gratuitous one.

As for the key itself... it features the 1st Full Appearance of Him, battling Thor for the hand of Lady Sif. It's also noted to be a last 12 cent issue... making it one of the last issues in the Silver Age before the transition to the Bronze Age.

After confirming the purchase on eBay, I went to Midtown Comics Grand Central and bought the hardcover Marvel Masterworks The Mighty Thor Volume 8 which reprints this issue as well as the follow-up story.

So now I only have three more to go before "The Keys to the Kingdom" is complete... but knowing me... I'll probably take my sweet time and purchase more high-priced dupes before getting this done.

Anyway... Thanks for reading and as always... Happy Collecting!

Very nice acquisition, I still remember my first Stan Lee signature, it was um, uh... Well, actually there were four diffrrent ones but I still remember the book that I watched Stan Lee sign, it was Daredevil #3, and the best part about that was I was escorted to the front of the line.

WOW, that's one awesome book there my friend. Congratulations!!

Nice for a Stan Lee signature as well. I'll be getting my 1st Stan Sig this year at Wizard World Chicago. I keep holding off, but no more. The great one is getting up there. Congrats my friend.

Thank you Brandon... I'm happy so far... but now I have the bug to complete other sets... like DC's The Shadow, Swamp Thing, Demon, and Marvel's Silver Surfer and Tales of the Zombie. My wallet is going to take a hit!

Hey BK,

I attended NYComicCon where this issue was signed but sadly I didn't get on line to meet Stan "The Man" Lee only because I thought it would be too long and time consuming... so I chose other lesser known artists. But I'm hoping to meet him in an upcoming con.

If indeed you're heading to WWChicago... take photos and share with us! I love Chicago! Great city, great food, great culture, great people... so the atmosphere at the Con should be electric!

Have fun at the show.

Wow Sean... that's a very nice FF67 and signed by "The Man" himself! That issue is awesome... Lee's brilliant "Marvel Soap Operaesque" drama coupled with Kirby's bombastic flair makes for a classic issue! The whole FF run they did together is by far the best of all runs! Thanks for reading and sharing!

Nice book, and doesn't matter if Stan signed it for you personally or not, just having his signature is cool and like you said it means even more when it's on a book he wrote. I just purchased tickets to have Stan Lee sign a couple books for me at the Amazing AZ Con here in a couple weeks! Pretty stoked about it. This will be my first time getting his signature and like Bradford mentioned, dude is getting up there so I'm seizing the opportunity now. Thanks to Tnerb for talking me through the Desert Winds process so I have an idea of what to expect when I get there. I'll let you know how it goes in a separate journal. :)

Dear S99,

You're absolutely right... Stan's up there... in fact he just turned 90 on December 29th... so I hate to say it... but how much longer?

I will also say, for a man of his advanced age, he's still so very full of life and incredibly spry... almost ageless and immortal like his creations.

Did you happen to see him in an episode of Comicbook Men? He imbues all the energy and excitement of a child at play! I love him for that!

You should definitely share pic and stories about your experiences at AAZCon... would love to read them.
