Looking for an investment grade copy of a major Silver Age Marvel key? Then look no further! Fantastic Four #1 is far and away the toughest of the first appearances to find in high grade, with a mere ten copies at 9.0 or better (and only thirty-two copies at 8.0 or better) in the current CGC Census.

 

This copy comes out of a sweet Montana collection that my good friend, Brian Peets (owner of A-1 Comics in Sacramento and Roseville), acquired directly from the original owner. The back story is classic. When the young man left home, his parents boxed up his childhood collection and placed it in a corner of his bedroom. The books remained in that exact spot until the owner returned to his childhood home in 2010. This relatively small collection consisted of Atlas pre-hero and DC superhero titles from 1958-62. The Marvel component was limited to just four books: Fantastic Four #1, #2, #3 and #4. The FF #2 was certified as a CGC 8.5 and the FF #4 was certified as a CGC 9.0. Wow!

 

The FF #1 is a very solid 8.0. The covers are clean and bright, and the corners/edges are sharp and unworn. Notable flaws include light toning to the inside/outside covers, a ½” long thin crease at the bottom-right corner, a few tiny spine ticks, and light shadows and a small smudge on the back cover. Although the pages were deemed to be off-white to white by CGC, they look identical to those of the FF #2, #3 and #4 from this collection (all of which received “White Pages” certification from CGC). This book was professionally pressed by Matt Nelson prior to encapsulation.
