SDMonster (aka Steve Dolnick) has done it again! This is the best collection of CGC graded/slabbed FMs that I have ever seen.

Oh man, I had to go change my shorts after seeing all this FM gold in one place. I'm running out to buy some lottery tickets after I post this message. Please, if there is a G-d in heaven let me win an instant lottery for $24,750!!!

That is more than $2000 each. There is no way that is even close to reality, is it? If so, I need to start tracking down some Famous Monsters.

I doesn't even have a #1 or #2

As rare are some of the mags are, the early issues might hit $2k each, but some of these have GPA data in the $400-600 range, recently. There are a bunch of 9.0's which is great for this era of magazine, but there are better copies of a bunch of these that exist.

It's a fun auction, but it feels about $8k heavy at $24,750.

I copied NOSTOMANIA's values for CGC graded/slabbed FMS and came up with the following:

FM 3/9.2: $2,620

FM 7/9.4: $3,070

FM 8/9.4: $2,320

FM 10/9.0: $ 379

FM 12/9.0: $ 273

FM 18/9.4: $1,610

FM 21/9.2: $1,350

FM 22/9.2: $1,260

FM 25/9.0: $ 259

FM 26/9.2: $1,130

FM 27/9.6: $ 984

62 YRB/9.0: $ 306

TOTAL: $15,561

Based on NOSTOMANIA values, whoever said that the price of this auction is about $8,000 "heavy" is CORRECT.

I don't care, I STILL WANT IT!!! :frustrated:

Well, it's gone as of yesterday. I suppose someone got to him with an offer he couldn't refuse. Those were beautiful books and while there are others as nice or better, there probably aren't very many... :cloud9:

There aren't too many nicer than those - and certainly not all in one place at one time! That was the part that made me crazy. It was like finding a pirate's treasure chest.

Most people really don't know all that much about FM. ???There are very few copies of the classic issues (##1-20) around in any condition. FM 1962 and 1965 Yearbooks in nice condition are scarcer than hens teeth. Show me a legitimate VF+ copy of the 1965 Yearbook out there right now? Check out the "past auctions" on eBay and find one. You WON'T! Try finding a #20 without a split spine! You'll have better luck searching for the Holy Grail in a Monty Python flick! doh!

Alot of people say that Nostomania's values are overpriced. Personally, I think that Nostomania may be somewhat undervaluing the iconic FMs based on what is out there. The reality is that very few classic FMs survived in VF-/7.5 or better condition. When you find a CGC graded/slabbed classic FM in 9.0 or better it is like finding gold. (worship)

I am willing to bet that the collection went for very close to its asking price after it was taken off eBay. Quite frankly, if I had the money I would have bought it even though according to Nostomania it was "$8,000 heavy."

As much as I prefer to simply be a lurker, this thread is too compelling for me to pass up.......

I tend to believe that in general, Warren collectors greatly overestimate the condition of their "raw" magazines, and in association, fail to realize exactly how scarce early FMs are in 9.0 or better. The auction may have been a little heavy, but $2,000 each isn't totally out of the question because #7 and #18 were 9.4 gems! Recent ebay sales have been FM #13 - CGC 9.4 - $3100; FM #5 CGC 9.0 - $1377, Heritage Auction FM #7 CGC 8.5 - $1500! Yes, I wish I could have won the scratch off lottery also!

You hit the nail on the head regarding Warren collectors overestimating the grade of their mags. In my personal catalogue of my collection I agonize over the grade of each FM and have changed a grade both up and down a number of times trying to get it as close to reality as I can.

In the few sales that I've made I really agonized over what grade to give a FM. Not wanting to mislead a potential buyer I tend to grade lower.

If you go through the auctions on eBay and examine the descriptions and photos closely it goes from the sublime to the ridiculous regarding the grades being given by the sellers of FMs.

"Famous Monsters of Filmland # xx in excellent condition with 2" spine split near top. Inside of magazine is mint." :roflmao:

What the f--k does that mean? It means avoid that seller. Either he is an a_sshole that doesn't know grading lingo and what the heck he's talking about, or he's a con-artist trying get over a low grade mag.

Even apparently good photos can be deceiving. But, I really hate the wise a_sses that take the photo so close up that just all the very edges of the mag are not visible. You just know there is spine and edge wear that they are trying to camoflauge. (tsk)

Taking all of the above into consideration, is it any wonder that collectors prefer to buy CGC graded mags? However, as I stated in an earlier post, don't take CGC grading for granted. Examine those mags thoroughly. Graders make mistakes and, from what I've seen, CGC grades for FM vary quite a bit.

Wow!-- I am drooling over that '62 yearbook.Batko is right the early yearbooks are near impossible to find in anything over a 7.0, heck I'd even say lower than that. Even back in the day when you could dig up raw high grade FM's. These little buggers we're still beaten to hell.

The rest of the books are very nice, but I have to admit I do not for a second believe they sold for 24K-- I mean I hope it did, cause it means my collection is worth more, but I just can't buy that it did. I could see 12K, maybe 14K tops. But thats just me. I'm cheap.

Wonderful post, Batko as per usual.

Now to make you drool even more!!! :eyeroll:

This raw copy of the FM 1962 Yearbook is in my collection and is the best "raw" copy that I personally have ever seen. I would give it a 9.2 on the Richter Scale! :headbang:

Aside from the fact that I don't collect CGC graded/slabbed FMs, CGC probably wouldn't grade it, because it has Forry's autograph on the front cover. I understand that if they don't witness the autograph they will not grade the mag as a Signature Series piece (a good policy!). They probably would consider the autograph a negative. :tonofbricks:

Having said that, I will admit to owning one CGC graded/slabbed FM. I searched for two years to find at least an 8.0/VF copy of the 1965 Yearbook without success. C-rap was (and still is) everywhere for relatively big bucks ($50 to $100+ for material that you wouldn't give more than a 5.0 grade). To make a long story short, I found a CGC 8.5 FM 1965 Yearbook on, of all places, HERITAGE. :o

This was about a month or two ago and, while I would periodically drool over their CGC auctions of FMs, I never purchased anything from them up to that point. Anyway, I saw a Buy-It-Now FM 1965 Yearbook CGC graded/slabbed at 8.5 / VF+. It was going for $160. I made a couple of offers and, after going back and forth with the seller a few times, bought the mag for $113 plus $12 shipping. (The shipping price was worth it. HERITAGE boxed that mag up like it was a painting from the Louvre. There was WOOD insided the package to protect the mag from bumps.)

Below is a close up of Forry's autograph on my 1962 Yearbook. It looks real to me. Any autograph experts out there have an opinion? ???
