Hey, I collect MAD Magazine and Rolling Stone issues. Now, i know how to store comic books in a proper way, but i was just wondering if anyone had any tips on storing magazines in a proper way. i can't seem to find the right sized sleeves or boxes, etc. If anyone has experience with this, I would much appreciate their help! Welcome to the boards. boardie hotflips sells bags and boards designed for magazines. As does some of the on-line retailers like bcw and comicsupply. They are all good to deal with. Avoid comicsupply.

In a pinch bags designed for CGC cases will also fit magazines.

Below is a copy of a message I posted in my Fans of Famous Monsters of Filmland yahoo group regarding magazine preservation.

Regardless of the rarity or value of a collection, every collector wants to preserve his treasures as best as possible.Certain collectibles such as coins are not difficult to preserve for long periods of time. However, paper collectibles such as stamps, paper money, comics, and magazines are a different story and can be problematic. This is especially true of the older, classic issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland.

Warren published these magazines that we love on cheap paper that is subject to self-destruction if not properly stored. The paper emits gases and is affected by its own, as well as outside, acidity. After studying this issue carefully, I came to a number of conclusions that will keep our collections of Famous Monsters of Filmland safe from itself and outside forces of deterioration.

MY PROCEDURE FOR FM MAGAZINE PRESERVATION:

1. Put micro-chamber paper between the front cover and first page, back cover and last page, in the middle of the magazine.

Micro-Chamber paper lasts for 10+ years and absorbs the self-destructive acids and gases produced by the low quality paper of the FM mags.

2. Place the issue of FM on a magazine size FULLBACK totally acid free board.

E. Gerber FullBack backboards are acid free throughout, not just coated on one side like most on the market. They will last forever and do not have to be changed every 5 years or so like typical backboards.

3. Place the issue of FM and Fullback board in a MYLITE2 magazine size bag.

Mylar lasts forever and does not have to be replaced every 5 years or so like regular plastic sleeves. It also gives the magazines a really sharp look.

4. Place the whole kit and kaboodle in a Ultra-Pro HARD PLASTIC HOLDER for added protection against bumps, bruises, etc.

For storing magazines I use a "LIFE" magazine size box. You can get them at the following link:

As you can see from the photos below my main collection of FMs (i.e. FM ##1-20, FM Yearbooks 1962-1971, and the reprints in subscriber format bags and cardboard headers fit nicely in the main part of the box. There is plenty of room on the side for me to keep my collection of "Number Ones" (i.e. non-FM first issues such as "Spacemen #1,", "Monsterworld #1," etc.

Bags Unlimited has a whole section for magazines and periodicals, among other storage supplies.

I just cancelled an order from Comic Supply. It has been pending since February 10th and they took my money off my credit card right away! The worst part is that there is no communication with these people. Phone calls go to voice mail and emails are never answered.

Needless to say, I am looking for a new vendor to purchase my Mylites2 and Gerber Fullback boards for my FMs. I am going to give Hot Flips a shot and am going to shoot them an order for Myelites 2 and Fullbacks after I post this message. They can't be any worse!

Same thing happened to me with Comic Supply, you should have no problems with Hot Flips.

I put in my order for 50 magazine size MYLITE2 bags and 50 Magazine size Gerber FULLBACK boards with Hot Flips on March 12th. The order was processed on March 13th and shipped on March 14th. The UPS tracking says that it will be delivered to my door on March 18th.

That sure beats waiting over a month and getting nothing but excuses from Comic Supply (if you can get in touch with them).

P.S. BTW, Hot Flips did not charge my credit card until they actually shipped the merchandise. Gee, I wonder where I will be doing business in the future - Hot Flips or Comic Supply???
