After all, by the end of the sixties the Stones had become "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band".

No, sorry. That can't be questioned. It's been trademarked at patent offices in all civilized countries.

(tsk)

Here's an article on the question though:

You have to appreciate that this is an argument that persists almost fifty years later.

While the argument persists, the Beatles packed it in by the end of 1969. Coincidentally that was the same year the Rolling Stones were first introduced with that moniker.

The bottom line though is that if you don't show up to play, you can't win the game - and the Rolling Stones have been the ones who have kept on rocking and rolling all these years.

Here's one of my favourite film clips of the Stones, and one of the very first rock videos ever made:

In the bio on Jagger I read recently, they claimed that James Brown was upset that he was not headlining and acted the fool about it backstage.James Brown opens for nobody is what I read...but hey, wouldn't be the first time something was wrong in print eh?

I don't think you can use live shows and going out and playing though as an overall litmus. I would then elevate Phish and U2 to Rolling Stones and Beatles status.

I agree. That's why I'm using the Stones' catalogue of hits over the last fifty plus years as the prime determinant:

I Wanna Be Your Man

Not Fade Away

Tell Me

Time Is on My Side

It's All Over Now

Heart of Stone

Little Red Rooster

The Last Time

Play with Fire

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

Get off of My Cloud

As Tears Go By

19th Nervous Breakdown

Paint It Black

Under My Thumb

Lady Jane

Mother's Little Helper

Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow?

Let's Spend the Night Together

Ruby Tuesday

We Love You

Dandelion

She's a Rainbow

2000 Light Years from Home

Jumpin' Jack Flash

Street Fighting Man

Sympathy for the Devil

Salt of the Earth

Stray Cat Blues

Honky Tonk Women

Gimme Shelter

Midnight Rambler

You Can't Always Get What You Want

Brown Sugar

B * tch

Sway

Can't You Hear Me Knocking?

Wild Horses

Tumbling Dice

Angie

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)

It's Only Rock 'N' Roll

Fool to Cry

Hot Stuff

Miss You

Beast of Burden

Shattered

Emotional Rescue

Start Me Up

She's So Cold

Waiting on a Friend

Undercover of the Night

She Was Hot

Harlem Shuffle

One Hit to the Body

Mixed Emotions

Rock and a Hard Place

Almost Hear You Sigh

Love Is Strong

You Got Me Rocking

Out of Tears

Anybody Seen My Baby?

Doom and Gloom

I still fall on the Beatles side of the argument...

and you are really stretching with Anybody seen my Baby. lol

Although I was at the Meadowlands on a cold November night to see them on that tour. Pretty sure that the Foo Fighters opened and both bands were pretty good.

You have some of the nicest shape Charlton SA I have ever seen. And Charlton is my great love!!!I didn't think most even hit the stands as nice as yours (worship)

I need to find many more! Particularly Space Adventures with Captain Atom, Gorgos, Kongas, Reptilicus, any Commie bashing war covers with Soviet submarines or MIG jet fighters, Black Fury, Wyatt Earp and other westerns, Atom the Cat, Atomic Mouse, Atomic Rabbit and any GGA romance comics.
