The reason I'm not posting this in the "This Week in My Magazine Collection" thread is because it is coming out all distorted for some reason. I think that thread has run its course and is self-destructing due to the unusually large photos being posted there.

Anyway, over the last couple of weeks while I was on suspension for getting in trouble again in the Water Cooler I picked up some mags for my collection of "Number Ones."

Below is a copy of the 1965 first issue of "SHRIEK" magazine. It was advertised as a NM and, by George, I received what looks to me like a NM/9.4 copy of the mag!!!

Based on this buy, I have to give "MILE HIGH COMICS" 5 stars and my recommendation. They did NOT exagerate. Check out the pics below.

While I was in exile I also acquired the first issue of "MONSTER MANIA" which came out in 1965 for my collection of Number Ones.

It is tough to find high grade mags with black covers of the monster genre of that era. While they are the sharpest looking covers IMHO, they are also the most easily damaged - sometimes just by opening the mag!

I found a number of MMs #1 on eBay - most for over $60 in what was described as "VG to F" condition. One particular seller had the one I bought up as a VF for $24 plus $4 shipping. With my pocket book still reeling from the purchase of the FM #1, I decided to take a shot. I lucked out with "SHRIEK #1," so I figured that lightening might strike twice. Anyway, no one else bid and I won the mag.

I was VERY pleased when I received this beauty. Except for two or three very light, minor white ticks on the spine (they are not even visible in the photos), this is about as close to pristine for this issue as you are going to get. I would give it a VF+/8.5.

I had already stopped collecting monster mags in 1965 and was not familiar with Monster Mania. Apparently, this particular issue was totally put together and edited by Russ Jones. It is a heck of a mag with excellent articles and great photos. It definitely should have made FM look to its laurels!

Check out the pics below.

This is off-topic, but it is a recent acquistion. Actually, it was an acquisition made about 20 minutes ago.

I picked up a nice 8x10 B+W photo of my childhood pro-wrestling hero Buddy "Nature Boy" Rogers. This pic is circa 1960 and the type sold at the wrestling shows at MSG in NYC. - Mike

Last but not least, the final acquisition that I made for my collection of Number Ones while on my latest forced sabbatical from the boards was the first issue of "MONSTERS OF THE MOVIES."

The cover of this 1974 mag would normally be a bit cartoonish for my taste. However, for some reason the more I looked at it the more it grew on me! I'd give it a VF+/8.5. - Mike

"REVENGE OF DRACULA," Eerie Publications, 1977 is a nifty little one-shot that was added to my collection of "Number Ones" this afternoon.

As fast as you could say Count Alucard a dreary, rainy day remained a dreary, rainy day - but with the addition of a new monster magazine for my collection!

"REVENGE OF DRACULA" is a nicely presented collection of interesting articles on vampires with some good stills from old movies. This issue was advertised as NM. I'd give it an 8.5/VF+. For 18 bucks (including shipping) I'm satisfied.
